On Friday, Joe Biden told French President Emmanuel Macron that he was “clumsy” in the way he left France out of an anti-China defense deal in September.
In an attempt to help Australia resist Chinese aggression, the United States combined forces with Britain and Australia announced a three-way agreement to form a military alliance. The deal stated that the U.S. and Britain would help Australia in building a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines to counter the powerful fleet of the Chinese. In the process, Biden completely cut France out of the deal.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian later called it a “stab in the back”.
When Biden finally had the opportunity to talk it over with Macron, he tried to put the blame on others.
“I think what happened, to use an English phrase, what we did was clumsy,” Biden said. “It was not done with a lot of grace. I was under the impression that certain things had happened that had not happened. France is an extremely, extremely valuable partner. Extremely. And a power in and of itself”
“I was under the impression that France had been informed long before that the deal was not going through, honest to God,” he added.
Watch:
It’s incredibly sad to see that we have such poor leadership in the White House.
