As news about the Durham probe swirls, with the conservative commentariat launching rage-filled Molotovs at the left as Hillary hides and the corporate press remains silent, Trump has remained remarkably (for him) silent.
He released a brief series of statements in one of which he suggested that those who spied on him should be hanged and in which he described the spying as “worse than Watergate,” but, other than that, hasn’t been overly outspoken.
Whether because of his Twitter ban or because he wanted to wait and see what happens, he has so far stayed on the sidelines and let the conservative press fight this battle for him, hammering the leftists that are doing their best to just ignore it all.
Up until now, that is. He just spoke to Fox and made some major statements, describing both how he sees the spying and hinted at what we’ll see next with the probe. Speaking to Fox, he said:
“It looks like this is just the beginning, because, if you read the filing and have any understanding of what took place, and I called this a long time ago, you’re going to see a lot of other things happening, having to do with what, really, just is a continuation of the crime of the century. This is such a big event, nobody’s seen anything like this.”
Additionally, Trump said “This is treason at the highest level” after saying “Who would think a thing like this is even possible? Durham is also coming up with things far bigger than anybody thought possible—Nobody ever thought a thing like this would be even discussed, let alone an act like this committed.”
Later, after complimenting Durham on the good work he’s doing, Trump went on the attack against the media, saying:
“Another crime is being committed—and that’s the crime of the media,” Trump said. “The media is absolutely not—they refuse to talk about it and yet it is 10 times bigger than Watergate.
The press is corrupt and they don’t like to cover it. They’re sort of being forced. It is such a big story, I don’t know that they can play the game much longer.”
We’ll see if Trump is right and there really is more in the Durham pipeline. It’s possible, but we’ve been let down enough times and Hillary has slipped off the hook frequently enough that it’s hard to believe much will really come of it. Still, it’s possible.
What is clear is that Trump was right when he, speaking in the interview with Fox, said “This is as bad as it gets. They got caught and they’re trying to figure out what to say to dim it a little bit.”
That it clearly is. One candidate used the power of the government to spy on and frame a political opponent, using law enforcement and intelligence assets to frame him. Other than outright war, what could be worse than such a coup?
