Lebron James is many things, but a patriot certainly isn’t one of them. Whether it’s his support and defense of China, his anti-American outlook, or his obvious disdain for American culture and tradition, he makes his lack of respect or love for America quite obvious.
But recently he took that up a notch, escalating his disdain for this great nation to a new level during an NBA game in Cleveland.
What happened? Well, during the rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner performed by singer Macy Gray, he didn’t stand respectfully at attention to hear the national anthem.
Instead, he was caught on camera snickering and trying to suppress his laughter while Gray performed the national anthem.
Fortunately, he was the only one to start laughing during the pre-game, patriotic ritual. The other players panned by the camera, whatever their personal opinions, were acting respectfully. Here’s the video:
Now, to be fair, it was an…odd rendition of the National Anthem, performed as it was with an acoustic guitar. As the New York Post reports:
The Grammy Award-winning R&B singer sang a peculiar version of “The Star Spangled Banner,” particularly in her melodic and vocal decisions near the end of the performance. She was accompanied by a guitarist.
Immediately after her last note, Gray’s performance began trending on Twitter.
It was a similar scene to Fergie’s performance before the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, when stars Steph Curry and Draymond Green were shown visibly confused and laughing at the 46-year-old’s rendition of the anthem.
But James could have respected the flag. He could have maintained his composure and let the moment be about something other than him and his opinions on the anthem.
Yet he didn’t. Instead of being respectful, he made a scene and made the moment about him and showed yet again that he’s a) not a serious person, however much he might try opening random books to appear as one, and b) doesn’t respect our nation or its flag.
Predictably, Twitter savaged the NBA star for his laughing during the anthem, with leftists hitting the BLM supporter both for not “respecting” black voices and conservatives skewering him for being disrespectful and laughing during the anthem, especially given his past support of China. As the Daily Mail notes:
Some Twitter users seemed annoyed over James’ reaction and the attention surrounding it.
‘Lebron James is supposed to protect black women,’ one user wrote. ‘He shouldn’t been an adult and kept a straight face while Macy Gray was performing. People felt comfortable to laugh at her style of singing because the camera cut to Lebron holding in his laughter smh.’
Another called him ‘a joke,’ ‘disgusting’ and ‘disrespectful,’ noting his past controversy involving China, adding the hashtag #ChinaKing.
Said one user: ‘LeBron is actually very weird for laughing at Macy Gray during the national anthem. That has been her tone forever, so why was that funny?’
Who knows what LeBron was laughing at. Maybe it was the voice, maybe it was the idea of respecting America, maybe it was something else. But what is clear is that he doesn’t have the discipline or inclination to respect our flag and anthem.
