Watch: Tesla Owner’s Viral Rant about Charging Goes Viral

What’s the dirty little secret about Teslas and other electric vehicles? That no matter how sleek they look, how funny of a guy Elon Musk is, or how much leftists praise them, they take forever to charge. They might look cool, might have great acceleration, and the left might act like they’re better for the environment than gas-powered cars,

However true that is and however cool of cars they are, that doesn’t change the main problem: if you don’t charge your Tesla overnight, it’s going to take a while to charge during the day, something very inconvenient when lots of people descend on a Tesla charging station.

In fact, according to Electrek, even a Tesla Supercharger station, by far the fastest way to charge a Tesla, takes longer than it takes to fill up a tank of gas.

In that website’s words “Currently, most Tesla Superchargers can now recharge up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes, depending on the rate of charge.” That might sound impressive, but a Model S has an almost 400 mile range. That means that the best-case scenario is that it would take about 30 minutes to fill up. Now imagine dozens of those waiting in line for a charging port and you’ll see the problem.

And that’s the fastest of the options. Normal electric car charging stations of the sort you might have in your garage or often see in parking lots, those can take hours to recharge an electric car’s battery.

Some electric car owners knew that from the outset and it didn’t bother them. Whether because they’re big fans of the cars, think driving an electric car is virtuous because it’s better for the environment, or because they charge their car at home and the range issue doesn’t bother them, the charging issue isn’t an issue for them.

But it is an issue for some people. What if a blackout means you can’t charge your Tesla at home? What if you forgot to plug it in overnight and need to drive to work in the morning? What if you need to drive a further distance than your car’s range and don’t want to wait an hour or mor in the middle of your trip?

Well, that can create an issue, as you’ll have to visit a Tesla Supercharger. If lots of people have to, then the wait is going to be quite inconvenient, as one Tesla owner noted in a viral video showing a long line of Teslas extending from a Supercharging station:

“The very rare time as a Tesla owner I wish I could pay $6/gallon for gas and be on my way. We need more super chargers.”

Bergman makes a fair point. $6 gas is painful on the wallet, but at least it only takes a few minutes. Electricity is cheap, but it could take half an hour or more for you to fill up a Tesla, and that’s if there isn’t a long line of others in front of you. Looks like gas might have a good bit more staying power than the electric vehicle proponents say.
