When Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was initially hospitalized, the Supreme Court initially released an optimistic statement about his health and hospitalization, saying:
“Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., on Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms. He underwent tests, was diagnosed with an infection, and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics. His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two.”
However, as a few days came and went with no update, people started to wonder what was going on; though SCOTUS had initially said that Justice Thomas would be released within a few days, there were no updates given until Wednesday, five days after the initial hospitalization story broke.
As the AP reported on the Supreme Court’s Wednesday statement:
The Supreme Court declined to say Wednesday whether 73-year-old Justice Clarence Thomas remains in the hospital, though he had been expected to be released by Tuesday evening.
It added that:
The court heard arguments Wednesday morning and Chief Justice John Roberts said, as he has for the past two days, that while Thomas was not present he would participate in the case by reviewing the arguments’ transcript and briefs. Roberts said Thomas was “unable to be present today” without explanation.
Well, now Justice Stephen Breyer has spoken out about Justice Thomas’ health amid the swirling rumors surrounding the situation. Newsweek, reporting on the update given by Justice Breyer and the court, had this to say:
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer has said his colleague, Justice Clarence Thomas, is not in any danger after being hospitalized for an infection last week.
TMZ reported Thursday that Breyer said the 73-year-old Supreme Court Justice was fine, barely a week after he was hospitalized on March 18, after he experienced flu-like symptoms.
Later, a Twitter account associated with the Supreme Court, Twitter blog, announced that Thomas had been released, saying:
BREAKING: Clarence Thomas was discharged from the hospital today, the Supreme Court said. The court gave no further information.

So, though many were worried about what has happened to Justice Thomas given that no reports have come out about how he’s doing, if Justice Breyer is to be believed then Justice Thomas is fine and recovering.
What’s unclear is why the court seems loathe to give details, particularly given that speculation abounds when details are scarce. Newsweek, adding to its reports on Breyer’s statement with a note on the rampant Twitter speculation that might have sparked it, notes that:
A tweet that went viral on Wednesday said that he was “very ill” and using a ventilator in hospital. The tweet has now been deleted and there is no evidence to support its claim.
However, the tweet prompted a huge amount of Google search interest around Thomas’ health.
So, hopefully, Justice Breyer’s statement will quiet such concerning speculation and, more importantly, hopefully it is true and Justice Thomas is recovering.
