Well, yet another member of Team Kamala left the cackling Vice President behind and moved on. That would be Michael Fuchs, her deputy chief of staff for the past 15 months. He, in a letter published by Fox News, said:
“It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve in this administration, working for the Vice President and President on behalf of the American people.
“Fifteen months later, it’s almost difficult to recall the magnitude of the challenges we faced when we came in, from an unprecedented pandemic to historically difficult economic circumstances. And it is thanks to the work of this administration – and all of you – that our country has had such success in tackling these challenges and turning things around.”
The Sun, reporting on the drama surrounding Fuchs’ departure, noted that:
Fuchs’ exit follows the exit of Harris’ deputy press secretary, chief spokesperson, director of press operations, director of speechwriting and national security advisor among others.
Social media rumors have been fueled by these departures, as rumors have leaked out about Harris’ office being a toxic workspace with a lot of infighting, leading to high turnover among staffers.
And those rumors about “a toxic workspace” are where the “soul destroying bully” line in the title comes from. It’s a combination of what a Team Kamala staffers said upon ditching the cackler’s ship back in December of 2021, saying that her criticism was soul-destroying and that she was a bully. The Post Millennial reported as much at the time, saying:
Over a dozen current and former staffers of Harris spoke with The Washington Post, with those criticizing her leadership saying working for her can mean enduring “a constant amount of soul-destroying criticism.”
One of the things we’ve said in our little text groups among each other is what is the common denominator through all this and it’s her,” said Gil Duran, a former Democratic strategist and aide to Harris who quit after working with Harris for just five months in 2013. In a recent column written for The San Francisco Examiner, he said she’s repeating “the same old destructive patterns.”
[…]Some staffers that previously worked with Harris before she was the vice president said that one consistent problem was that she would refuse to read up on briefing materials prepared by staff members, then get angry and berate employees when she would consequently appear unprepared.
“It’s clear that you’re not working with somebody who is willing to do the prep and the work,” one former staffer said. “With Kamala you have to put up with a constant amount of soul-destroying criticism and also her own lack of confidence. So you’re constantly sort of propping up a bully and it’s not really clear why.”And that’s not even the end of it. If Fuchs jumping ship is the third wave of Kamala crises in the staffing department and the Post Millennial-reported exodus was the first big jumping of ship, there was a 2nd; it took place in March of . That was when her national security advisor jumped ship back in March of 2022. The New York Post, reporting on the incident at the time, said:
Vice President Kamala Harris’ national security adviser has become the latest high-profile staffer to leave the veep’s office, according to a report.
Nancy McEldowney, who has worked for Harris since she took office, will be replaced by her deputy Philip Gordon, said an internal memo obtained by Reuters on Monday.
Fuchs and McEldowney both managed to leave without raising too much of a fuss or spreading rumors about their former boss, at least, unlike the ones discussed by the Post Millennial. But still, it’s more drama for Kamala’s office: if the rumors are untrue, why are so many Kamala staffers leaving?
