Pick an issue, any issue, and there’s an excellent chance that President Joe Biden’s polling numbers on it are tanking. The economy? Check. Foreign policy? Check. COVID? Check. But there is probably no issue on which Biden’s disapproval is more pronounced than immigration, and Democrats are jumping off his sinking border ship in droves.
A week ago today, the Biden Administration announced that effective May 23rd, it will effectively discontinue the order known as Title 42. This tool which was put in place by the Centers for Disease Control during the Trump Administration allowed federal officials to limit the influx of immigrants coming across the border in the name of preventing COVID.
So, even though the Administration continues with its COVID scare tactics and refuses to let go of vaccine mandates out of one side of its mouth, from the other side they’re telling us that the COVID crisis has subsided sufficiently to allow potentially infected migrants to cross the border. None of their communications on the topic make any sense, and vulnerable congressional Democrats know it.
According to The Hill, Democrats in purple states and districts are pushing back and calling out the Administration for its lunacy:
“Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) called it a ‘frightening decision.’ Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) called it ‘wrong.’ And Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) said the Biden administration ‘does not appear to be ready’ for the surge in migration that could result. Kelly and Hassan both face difficult reelection battles in November.”
And that’s just in the Senate.
Immigration has been a hot-button topic for Americans for years, and that fact isn’t changing anytime soon. What’s worse for the Biden Administration is that polls show the issue as being one with which Americans are most critical of the president, with one recent poll showing that 55% of Americans either disapprove or strongly disapprove of Biden’s handling of immigration. Add all these components together and you get some very jittery Democrats.
The reality is that Biden is between a rock and a hard place. While he’s been trying to cater to his leftist base on immigration, thinking that such an approach will gain favor with Hispanic voters, he’s also forced to stick with his COVID narrative. But what’s really starting to scare congressional Democrats is the issue of national security and how it will be affected by an unavoidable border surge when Title 42 goes away.
Life in Congress is Darwinian. Creatures that inhabit it will adapt and evolve as they strive for self-preservation, first and foremost. And for senators and representatives facing strong headwinds in November, unhitching their wagon to the disastrous Biden Administration is a natural thing to do.
