Much has been made about the dire prospects for the Democratic Party in November. Mid-term elections almost always see an electoral erosion for the party in power, and when that party’s president is struggling with opinion polls, the consequences can be severe. For the Democrats, President Joe Biden has somehow managed to reach historically low approval ratings, and leftwing political prognosticators are undoubtedly feeling nauseated as they read the tea leaves.
But what about the next presidential election cycle? What about 2024? Does the future look any brighter for Democrats? It may be a long way off but consider this fact: In less than two years, we will have already completed the earliest voting in the presidential primary season in states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, and it’s probable that the favorites for both parties will be well-established with the remaining elections being foregone conclusions.
The Washington Post, which is essentially just a branch of the Democratic Party’s Communications Department, examined the current crop of possible candidates, and to say the list looks feeble would be a dramatic understatement:
10. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)
9. California Governor Gavin Newsom
8. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ)
7. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH)
6. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper
5. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)
4. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)
3. Vice-President Kamala Harris
2. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg
1. President Joe Biden
Yup, that’s the list.
Some interesting points to note from the Post’s roster. First, we see that half of the list Booker, Klobuchar, Warren, Harris, and Buttigieg already made a run at the nomination in 2020 and failed miserably. It’s also curious to see that Buttigieg is ranked higher than Harris, which gives us an idea of exactly how unpopular Harris is.
Of the newcomers, three are white men, which is problematic for a party that lives and breathes with identity politics. Brown and Cooper will be viewed as centrists which will be their kiss of death if they run, and neither have the personality to generate any real excitement.
Newsom is a radical leftist in a radically left state, but is so incompetent he had to endure a recall vote last fall. And then we have AOC, who may be beloved by the Democrats’ vocal contingent on the far left of the party but is way outside of the mainstream of American politics. AOC is considered a laughingstock by huge swaths of the American public. AOC is a punchline, nothing more.
Which leaves us with… drum roll… Joe Biden. Uggh.
It all seems familiar somehow, doesn’t it? In one of the more famous scenes from the original Bad News Bears movie, Coach Buttermaker, who is played by the late Walter Matthau, looks at his bench and sees nothing but subpar options available to substitute for his team on the field. Such is the predicament of today’s Democratic Party. Take a look:
“Mr. Buttermaker, I don’t know about you, but I want to win. So, don’t send me in.”
That character, named Lupus, ends up getting into the game and catching a ball hit deep to right field, though his team ultimately loses. It’s safe to say, whatever “booger-eating moron” is sent into the game for the Democrats in two years will make Lupus look like Roberto Clemente.
