Are universities woke? Almost every single one of them is, yes.
But, still, “almost” is the key word there. While many are woke beyond belief and terrible, there are a few that have resisted the advance of the blue-hair diversity commissars and still fight for real values and real education.
One such institution is Hillsdale, the famous conservative college that famed author and commentator Victor Davis Hanson teaches at sometimes.
But there’s another non-woke university too, Ralston College. It, describing itself on its website, states:
“Many universities have abandoned the search for truth and self-knowledge. Contradistinctively, Ralston College calls others to join the quest, rather than indoctrinating them into cynical dismissal, division, and despair. The quest for truth is the route out of the meaning crisis and to a free and flourishing human culture.”
A quest for truth and self-knowledge? That sure doesn’t sound woke, particularly the “truth” part.
But does Ralston College live up to those lofty ideals and actually practice what it preaches, or has it fallen into the trap of saying it does one thing while really being about as woke as any of the others?
Surprisingly, it looks like Ralston is actually trying to reject wokeness and pursue the truth. In fact, it just took a major step to do so, appointing Jordan Peterson as Chancellor!
Announcing that major move on its website, Ralston said:
Jordan Peterson is a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Toronto and the Chancellor of Ralston College. He is a distinguished scholar and psychologist, a renowned defender of freedom of thought and speech, and a teacher and mentor to millions around the world. His books—Maps of Meaning, 12 Rules for Life, and Beyond Order—exhibit the extraordinary range of his intellectual interests and open fields of inquiry to a wide range of readers and in more than thirty languages. In his writings and lectures, Dr Peterson draws upon scientific knowledge on the one hand, and mythological and symbolic insight on the other, to reveal the paths that lead to self-realization and purpose in human life.
As Chancellor, Dr Peterson is the formal and ceremonial head of Ralston College. The most ancient role at the university—with its origins in the Middle Ages—the Chancellor is both a symbol and a guardian: a symbol of continuity with centuries of artistic creation and philosophical reflection; of intellectual community and discovery; and a guardian of the freedoms on which these depend, of the activities that sustain them, and of the ceremonies that crown them. Above all, the Chancellorship advances the university’s most fundamental aim: to kindle and enlarge the human spirit.
Ralston College is greatly honored to have Dr Peterson as its Chancellor.
That’s big news. Huge, in fact.
Why? Because Peterson is very controversial. He might not be a reactionary, but he’s definitively non-woke and stands up for what he believes to be the truth, unlike many others that seem to bend with the wind.
His appointment sends a definitive message, a message of resistance to what the wokies want and of standing for a certain set of ideals whatever the cost. Good for Ralston!
