Recently, news came out that Elon is pausing his Twitter takeover bid, nominally due to a desire to figure out how many Twitter users are real and how many are actually bots. Obviously, he’d prefer to only pay for the real users and avoid having to pay for the bot accounts that he wants to get rid of.
Thus, the pause is a way for him and his team to figure out how to revalue Twitter, particularly now that the stock price has plummetted, and put forth a bid that only takes the real users into account.
That’s at least what Elon suggested when the news on the situation broke. Tweeting out the article about it, Elon said:
Twitter deal temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5% of users
Still committed to acquisition

Elaborating on what process his team would be using to figure out how many real Twitter users their are in a response to a request for those plans, Elon said:
Any sensible random sampling process is fine. If many people independently get similar results for % of fake/spam/duplicate accounts, that will be telling.
I picked 100 as the sample size number, because that is what Twitter uses to calculate <5% fake/spam/duplicate

Trump then took to Truth Social to talk about Elon’s decision, praising the South African innovator and businessman’s savvy and called out what he saw as Elon’s desire to get out of paying such a sky-high valuation for the company, saying:
“There is no way Elon Musk is going to buy Twitter at such a ridiculous price especially since realizing it is a company largely based on BOTS or Spam Accounts. Fake anyone? By the time you get rid of them, if that can even be done, what do you have? Not much? If it weren’t for the ridiculous Billion-Dollar breakup fee, Elon would have already been long gone. Just my opinion, but Truth Social is MUCH better than Twitter and absolutely exploding, incredible engagement!”
The plug for Truth Social at the end is classic Trump, and many have reported that Truth Social posts get better engagement than Twitter posts thanks to the algorithm issue.
Elon also made a few other jokes and comments about the situation on Twitter, joking in one two-part tweet that owning the libs, a funny double-entendre for the situation, isn’t cheap. Posting about that, he said:
Whoever thought owning the libs would be cheap never tried to acquire a social media company!
At least, that’s what the lib hivemind thinks haha

Tim Young, joking about the fury with which the left responds to Elon’s tweets, said:
I don’t need notifications for Elon Musk tweets… I just know it happens when I hear shrieking in the distance from the left.

In another joke, Elon said “The bots are angry at being counted 🤣”

Still, all the jokes would be funnier were Trump on Twitter to make them. Though Elon seems posed to invite him back, it’s doubtful Trump would crawl back to the platform, particularly given his creation of Truth Social. While understandable, it’s too bad, as this chaos would be awesome with Trump there to mix it up with the screaming wokies.
