Wayne LaPierre is the CEO of the National Rifle Association and, though once full of fire and brimstone (he’s the one who referred to the ATF and FBI agents who killed so many Americans at Waco as ‘jackbooted thugs’), has largely been in the news for corruption allegations rather than any bold, pro-gun speeches or statements.
Now, however, he’s finally come out swinging with a powerful defense of gun rights during the NRA’s annual conference, this year taking place in Houston, Texas.
Speaking to the massive crowd shortly after the tragic shooting in Uvalde, Texas, LaPierre hit back at leftist calls for gun control or even gun confiscation, saying “Restricting the fundamental human right of law-abiding Americans to defend themselves is not the answer. It never has been.”
The NRA CEO also noted that security at schools should be increased as children deserve to be protected at least as much as things far less valuable, saying “our children deserve at least, and in fact more protection than our banks, stadiums and government buildings.”
LaPierre also noted the importance of defending gun rights at this time, saying “as we gather, we know the eyes of the nation, the eyes of history, are upon us. And that’s a good thing. Because every American deserves to know the truth about who we are and what we believe.”
Governor Abbott joined LaPierre in attacking leftist calls for gun control, correctly noting that “There are thousands of laws on the books across the country that limit the owning or using of firearms, laws that have not stopped madmen from carrying out evil acts on innocent people in peaceful communities.”
Still, LaPierre’s defense was more powerful, as discussions of “rights” tend to stick better than claims about the efficacy of this law or that policy. LaPierre, in forcefully and correctly noting that the 2nd Amendment protects the fundamental right of gun ownership, probably chose the right path.
But, points about efficacy can be useful, so LaPierre noted that guns are often used to stop crime and by law-abiding citizens who defend themselves from the predations of criminals, saying:
“Each year, over 1 million law-abiding men and women use a firearm to save their own lives and the lives of their loved ones. … Taking away their right to self-defense is NOT the answer.”
Perhaps most powerfully of all, LaPierre, emphasizing the importance of the 2nd Amendment to the freedom and security we enjoy as Americans, said:
“Because we know there can be no freedom, no security, no safety, without the right of the law-abiding to bear arms for self-defense.”

Gun rights are a fundamental right, one critical to the survival of liberty. The Founders made that clear in the 2nd Amendment, though, apparently, they didn’t make it clear enough to get through the thick skulls of leftists.
Hence why speeches like LaPierre’s are necessary: gun-owners need to be reminded that their ability to own guns isn’t some temporary privilege, but rather a sacred right granted them by God.
