“Pretend to Work Somewhere Else”: Elon Blasts Lazy Employees, Working from Home in Awesome Email

Unsurprisingly for someone as driven and hard-working as he is, Elon Musk is not at all a fan of the recent “work from home craze”, particularly for Tesla’s white-collar employees.

So, unlike other bosses that have bowed to the demands of their workers and allowed them to continue working from home despite knowing that their productivity plummets when they’re at home rather than in the office, Elon is fighting back and demanding that employees return to the office or go work somewhere else.

He did so in an email titled “Remote wok is no longer acceptble” that was reported on by Fortune. In that email, Elon said:

“Anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum(and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. This is less than we ask of factory workers.

“If there are particularly exceptional contributors for whom this is impossible, I will review and approve those exceptions directly.

“Moreover, the “office” must be a main Tesla office, not a remote branch unrelated to the job duties, for example being responsible for Fremont factory human relations, but having your office be in another state.”

Further, the email gave no timeline for the policy so, as the Fortune article notes, it is possible that it’s meant to be effective immediately.

But that wasn’t the end of it. After being attacked for the message online, with many on Twitter claiming that people can work just as efficiently at home as in the office, Elon confirmed the authenticity of the email and responded without a shred of repentance or waffling, saying “they should pretend to work somewhere else”.

Further, making fun of work from home at Apple, a policy that that company just extended, Elon shared this meme:

This isn’t the first time in recent weeks that Elon has insisted employees at his companies actually start working rather than engaging in work from home pretend work or political nonsense. Attacking those Twitter employees who are not technically excellent but are instead employed for other reasons, Elon said:

If Twitter acquisition completes, company will be super focused on hardcore software engineering, design, infosec & server hardware

I strongly believe that all managers in a technical area must be technically excellent.

Managers in software must write great software or it’s like being a cavalry captain who can’t ride a horse!

Now, unlike his message to Tesla employees, that one to Twitter employees won’t be in effect until his buyout is complete and he takes over, perhaps as CEO of the platform, something that has been put on hold as he works to find out what percentage of Twitter accounts are really bots.

Still, it sends a message that the billionaire obviously wants his employees to get into their heads: whatever he’s up to, whatever employees at companies run by CEOs less driven and hard-working than he is might be doing, they need to be working as hard as ever, if not harder.
