Liz Cheney used her position as a token Republican on the January 6th Kangaroo Court to go after former President Donald Trump and push a vicious lie about what he was trying to do on January 6th, when a small fraction of the pro-Trump crowd in D.C. trespassed in the US Capitol.
Speaking during the hearing, Lying Liz Cheney claimed that Trump tried to use the protest to remain in power, saying:
“On the morning of January 6, President Donald Trump’s intention was to remain president of the United States, despite the lawful outcome of the 2020 election and in violation of his Constitutional obligation to relinquish power.”
She then blamed him for the attack, saying “President Trump summoned the mob, assembled the mob and lit the flame of this attack.”
That’s a disgusting lie; Trump, far from lighting the flame of any attack, encouraged his supporters to peacefully protest what he saw as Congressional acquiescence to a fraudulent vote, saying, at the time:
“We have come to demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated, lawfully slated. I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”
That’s a call for a peaceful protest and for Congress to take its role in counting the votes of electors seriously, not for a wild mob to attempt a coup.
Yet that’s pretty much what Liz went on to accuse Trump of, even claiming that he had a “sophisticated, seven-part plan” regarding how to do so. Accusing him of that, Liz said:
“1. President Trump engaged in a massive effort to spread false and fraudulent information to the American public claiming the 2020 election was stolen from him.
“2. President Trump corruptly planned to replace the Acting Attorney General, so that the Department of Justice would support his fake election claims.
“3. President Trump corruptly pressured Vice President Pence to refuse to count certified electoral votes in violation of the US Constitution and the law.
“4. President Trump corruptly pressured state election officials, and state legislators, to change election results.
“5. President Trump’s legal team and other Trump associates instructed Republicans in multiple states to create false electoral slates and transmit those slates to Congress and the National Archives.
“6. President Trump summoned and assembled a violent mob in Washington and directed them to march on the US Capitol.
“7. As the violence was underway, President Trump ignored multiple pleas for assistance and failed to take immediate action to stop the violence and instruct his supporters to leave the Capitol.
She also used her current notoriety to attack her fellow Republicans, almost all of whom are a bit more loyal to their party and constituents and find the Inquisition-like proceedings shameful and dreadful, saying:
“Tonight, I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.”
If only the Trump-backed Harriet Hageman could replace Cheney now, before she does even more damage to the GOP.
