Two teens in Connecticut briefly learned the deadly importance of the Second Amendment before perishing, as they broke into the house of an armed Connecticut homeowner and were shot dead a few days ago.
According to Fox News 61, which reported on the incident, “[o]ne of the teens was a 16-year-old male from Hartford and the other was a 15-year-old male from Meriden“, and that the duo broke into the home and started violently attacking the homeowner, who had a registered firearm that he used to shoot them. They were rushed to the hospital, but their wounds were fatal.
The homeowner was injured in the attack, but no other weapons were recovered at the scene. The injured homeowner reportedly greeted the police officer when they arrived and is cooperating with the detectives, who the Connecticut Insider notes are “investigating this incident as a possible targeted home invasion”, though it also notes that “there does not appear to be any danger to the public.”
Fox 61, adding more details as to the police response and investigation, notes that Connecticut does not have a stand your ground law, but that the circumstances make it appear that the use of deadly force was still justified by self-defense needs, saying:
Connecticut does not have a “stand your ground law.” Kenneth Gray, a former FBI agent and senior lecturer at the University of New Haven, said that means a person must first try to get away from the threat before using deadly force.
“You are justified in using self-defense to include a firearm if you fear for your life or the life of a third person but it’s not totally unrestricted. By that I mean if the person is threatening you, you can use deadly force but if you have other options for instance if you can run away, you have to run away,” he said.
“We’re treating this as a home invasion type incident where two males came into the home. And it appears to be a case of self-defense at this time, where the homeowner was a legal owner of the firearm,” Caruso said.
As the 15-year-old and 16-year-old attempted burglars were both of school age, Hartford Public Schools released a statement on their deaths, saying:
On Thursday, June 16, 2022, we were informed of the deaths of two former Hartford Public School students. This is an unfortunate and tragic incident, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of members of our Hartford Public Schools community. We are prepared to provide proper support and resources for students and staff affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts are with our former students’ families, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
Not noted by the school was that the homeowner was injured by the two students, nor that they died in what appears to be the attempted commission of a crime. At least the school didn’t attack the homeowner, unlike its students.
