ho would try robbing a store in a state known for being full of people who carry guns, love shooting guns, and have few compunctions about dealing with criminals as their cowboy and Ranger ancestors did?
Not someone with many brains or foresight, that’s for sure.
And that’s particularly true when the criminal doesn’t even bring a gun, which might put him on an equal plane with the potentially packing customers and workers at a store, but instead a measly knife; who hasn’t heard the phrase “never bring a knife to a gunfight?”
In any case, that’s exactly what happened in Texas on Tuesday, when a criminal entered a store with a “bladed weapon” and trying to steal cash out of the cash register. What a fool.
And get this: it wasn’t just any store the thug was trying to rob, but “Carter’s Country guns and ammunition store”…at 3 pm, the bright of day…by himself. So one guy walked into a gun store in Texas the middle of the day with nothing more than a knife and tried to rob it…
Predictably, it ended with the store perfectly fine and the perp perforated by high-velocity projectiles, with a store employee shooting him twice, terminating the threat.
A Houston Police Department Lieutenant, speaking on the robbery and shooting, said:
“Once he went there (the gun shop), he actually went behind the counter (and) started ruffling through the cash register. He was confronted by one of the employees, at that point, one of the employees felt in fear of their safety and fired two shots, at least one struck.”
So maybe it was a singular high-velocity projectile rather than “projectiles,” but the point remains the same: bringing a knife to what was obviously going to be a gunfight went about as poorly as could be expected, particularly given that saying to never do that is an aphorism at this point.
The perp died after being shot, and so the case will be submitted to a grand jury for review. However, given that the man was shot while armed with a bladed weapon after stealing from the cash register after attempting to rob a store next door, it seems that the employee was fully within his rights.
Under Texas law, Texas Penal Code 9.31, “a person is justified in using force against another when and to the degree the actor reasonably believes the force is immediately necessary to protect the actor against the other’s use or attempted use of unlawful force.”
That would appear, based on the facts, to be the case here, most particularly because the robber was armed, if only with a knife.
The Daily Wire notes that this is not the first time Carter’s has been robbed, reporting that:
In 2016, Carter’s Country was the scene of a brazen, early dawn heist in which thieves stole more than 50 weapons. Surveillance footage showed the thieves backing a black Ford F-250 pickup truck up to the store and attaching chains to the door and the rear of the truck to rip the door off its hinges. They then ransacked the store, smashing display cases and stealing rifles and handguns. Police busted the ring within days.
