It’s a fairly common phenomenon, though we normally see it with adolescents and teenagers. They bite the hand that feeds them, then come back with their tails between their legs pleading for help.
The 14-year-old lashes out at Dad for making him cut the lawn, then asks him for $200 for a new pair of Adidas shoes that same afternoon. The newly licensed driver says, “Yeah, yeah, yeah” on her way out the door with the car keys as Mom reminds her to drive safely, and then calls home in tears two hours later after she gets into a fender-bender. And the 19-year-old college freshman gets punched at a rally to “Defund the Police,” and then calls 911.
Though we don’t often see such scenes play out with 31-year-old multi-millionaire female basketball stars, that’s exactly what we’re witnessing right now with American basketball star Brittny Griner.
According to CBS:
“A handwritten letter from Brittney Griner was delivered to the White House on Monday morning, according to the Griner family, who provided excerpts to reporters. In her letter, the imprisoned WNBA star pleaded with the president not to forget her, and said her already deep appreciation for Independence Day has taken on new meaning this year.
‘I’m terrified I might be here forever,’ wrote Griner, who has been detained in Russia since mid-February. ‘On the 4th of July, our family normally honors the service of those who fought for our freedom, including my father who is a Vietnam War Veteran. It hurts thinking about how I usually celebrate this day because freedom means something completely different to me this year.’”
First, in no particular order, a few thoughts:
– You say you’re “terrified?” You should be. Your trial began last week, and prosecutors are successful 99% of the time in Russia. And if convicted, you could be behind bars for ten years.
– You say you “honor the service of those who fought our freedom?” That’s funny Brittney, because when you were here living free, enjoying the fruits of their sacrifices, you were trashing our country at every opportunity and refusing to even enter sports arenas until after our National Anthem was played.
– You say, “freedom means something completely different to me this year?” We bet it does, Brittney, we bet it does.
Brittney Griner can beg President Biden all she wants, but ultimately the decision comes down to Vladimir Putin, and it’s highly unlikely that Putin is in the mood to do our Commander-in-Chief any favors.
Putin knows Biden is weak, as evidenced by Biden’s pathetic withdrawal from Afghanistan last summer, a debacle that undoubtedly emboldened Putin to invade Ukraine in the first place. Biden has led from behind but has been fully supportive of sanctions and other efforts to oppose Putin. And Mr. Biden blames Putin for just about everything bad in the world, from unfavorable election results to skyrocketing gas prices. If Biden poops in his pants again today, which is a distinct possibility, he will manage someway to attribute the mishap to Putin.
Unfortunately for Brittney Griner, she is nothing more than a bargaining chip right now. She is merely a pawn in a Putin Vs Biden chess match, one in which Biden thinks he’s playing checkers. Vladimir Putin is going to keep Griner in that Russian prison for as long as it suits him, and until he can get a maximum return on his investment.
In the meantime, every day that passes increases Griner’s value for a potential prisoner swap and other concessions. As the humiliation mounts for Biden and the Democrats who can do nothing to free one of their favorite leftwing celebrities, Brittney Griner continues to have nothing but time on her hands to rethink that whole “I hate America” schtick. We can only hope she’s experiencing a genuine change of heart.
