James Caan, the “macho man” of Hollywood that is known for his tremendously good performances in movies like Godfather, in which he played Sonny Corleone, and as a rough-and-tumble athlete in Rollerball, has died. He was 82 years old when he died.
That was announced on Twitter by his account, which said:
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6.
The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.

The Hollywood Reporter provided a bit more detail about what is currently known about Caan’s death, saying:
Caan died Wednesday night in Los Angeles, his rep Arnold Robinson told The Hollywood Reporter, confirming a post on the actor’s Twitter account. Neither he nor the family would reveal a cause of death.
Caan will best be remembered for his explosive performance as Sonny in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972). Mesmerizing as the volatile and confrontational eldest son and heir apparent to his family’s criminal empire, he earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.
Many online were quick to announce their sadness upon hearing the news, with messages about how great Caan was coming from across the political spectrum.
Far-left, anti-Trump actor Rob Reiner, for example, said:

One sicko with a Ukrainian flag in his bio, however, attacked Caan for having supported Trump, saying:

My introduction to James Caan was as Coach Sam Winters when I was 10 years old. Since then I went on to see his classic roles (Godfather / Brian’s Song / Misery / etc) and enjoyed his thoroughly in Elf.

Caan, it should be noted, was an “ultra conservative” Trump-supporter, as the Daily Wire reported, saying:
It’s worth noting that Caan was also an unapologetic conservative who said he supported Donald Trump in 2016. “I’m an ultra conservative,” he said at Moet & Chandon’s 6th Annual Hollyshorts Film Festival Opening Night Celebration in Los Angeles, per Fox News. “I’m not a G**damn Hollywood liberal, I’m not,” he continued, swearing he only watched Fox News.
