As if the broken Trump/Pence relationship couldn’t get more outrageous, news recently broke that that former vice president Mike Pence would be cozying up to Establishment darling Karrin Taylor Robson in the swing state’s gubernatorial race.
Robson has also been supported by outgoing governor Doug Ducey, another political figure who does not see eye to eye with Trump’s MAGA movement.
Mike Pence put out a wimpy, pathetic statement to the press expressing the boilerplate reason for his endorsement.
“As Arizona Democrats pursue the reckless Biden-Harris agenda, Karrin Taylor Robson is the only candidate for Governor that will keep Arizona’s border secure and streets safe, empower parents and create great schools, and promote conservative values.”
It’s amazing how anyone can take this endorsement seriously. Establishment Republicans love an open border as much as their rival Democrats. Only Dinald Trump takes it seriously, as we can presume Lake would as well. What has Doug Ducey done for the border during his tenure? The last part, though, where he suggests Robson will promote “conservative values” is simply disgusting. No one has promoted the true conservative caucus more than Donald Trump – and Pence has done nothing except be the typical Republican speed bump that enables Democrats to keep doing whatever they want.
CNN correctly notes that Pence’s endorsement of Robson puts him at odds in multiple ways. It is simply not repudiating his former boss, but also against several key narratives swirling around D.C., such as the perceived fairness of the 2020 presidential election and the events of January 6th.
“The move by Pence to endorse Robson is rightly understood then not as simply a rejection of a Trump-backed pick, but an attempt to affirm that the 2020 election was, in fact, free and fair. Pence and Trump are scheduled to hold dueling rallies on behalf of their preferred candidates in the state on Friday.”
CNN also took note that this is not the first time Pence has gone behind his former boss – and directly against the growing freedom movement within the conservative wing.
“[T]his isn’t the first time Pence has done something like this. He backed Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in the spring, putting him, again, on the opposite side of Trump, who had recruited former Sen. David Perdue into the Republican primary. (Kemp, like Ducey, was repeatedly attacked by Trump for his refusal to overturn the 2020 results in his state.)”
The Arizona race is shaping up to be a key decider in the future of the Republican Party. Whereas Georgia’s Trump-backed candidate that lost, David Perdue, was as a D.C. insider as the rest of the swamp-filled ranks, Kari Lake is different. She has gone on record asserting the fraudlunce of the 2020 election, has questioned the mysterious death of Jeffrey Epstein, and vociferously supported the MAGA movement that seeks to put freedom and Americans first.
Depending on how the purple state of Arizona votes, the Republican Party’s future will be revealed to the rest of the nation.
