We have heard it before, “No, Hollywood is not responsible for America’s unique gun culture.” This is often followed by a “gun grab” narrative. Of course, Hollyweird wants you to believe this – they have a financial interest in doing so.
Others would disagree. Finally, we have one Hollyweird celebrity willing to come out and say so publicly. A recent “Real Time” with Bill Maher’s monologue gave a scathing indictment that Hollyweird has a significant responsibility regarding the cause of gun violence in America. Below are some excerpts from Mahar’s monologue.
“When liberals scream do something after a mass shooting, why aren’t we also dealing with the fact that the average American kid sees 200 000 acts of violence on screens before the age of 18 and that, according to the FBI, one of the warning signs of a potential school shooter is a fascination with violence-filled entertainment.”
“A studio spent 10 million dollars to digitally remove Kevin Spacey (due to sexual misconduct allegations) from a movie, but when it comes to the unbridled romanticization of gun violence.”
“Most movie heroes are getting over a grudge by mowing down a multitude of human beings because no impressionable young male would ever imitate that.”
“The far left will say that I’m delivering some sort of conservative rant here or that I’m undermining gun control. No, it’s neither.”
“There’s a pie chart of why mass shootings happen, and we don’t know exactly how much of each of the pieces is responsible, but the major ones are:
- mental health that is broken young men who feel like losers and want the world to hurt like they do,
- easy access to guns,
- kids having smartphones which make losers feel even worse because of the bullying and all the fake lives that look better than theirs and yes, yes, crazy amounts of gun violence, and
- movies and TV.
We don’t show movie characters smoking anymore because it might look cool and influence children, but you’re telling me these cool dudes don’t influence them.”

Bill Maher’s pie chart is curious. We were looking for a study to substantiate his claims. But, Maher did say, “we don’t know exactly how much of each of the pieces (referring to pieces of the pie chart).” In other words, apparently, he just made up the pie chart.
Nevertheless, the admission of Hollyweird responsibility is remarkable. Below is a chart from a previous poll from CNN/Time/ORC that would seem to substantiate at least part of Maher’s pie chart.
In this poll above, 37% believed popular culture is a cause of gun violence – even larger than mentioned in Maher’s pie chart. Not mentioned in Maher’s pie chart is parental child-rearing, which in the above chart is also 37%. Instead, Maher blames smartphones – perhaps another admission of a truth that the device is the kids’ new parents.
Hollyweird is starting to take note of their responsibility. Over 200 members of Tinseltown’s best and brightest have signed a pledge promising to portray guns in a responsible way onscreen. A batch of writers, actors, producers, and directors – including Jimmy Kimmel, Mark Ruffalo, and Amy Schumer – have endorsed an agreement titled #ShowYourSafety for Brady United.
However, when looking at this Brady United initiative (Brady Plan), its efforts have little to do with the causes, as seen in the charts and Maher’s monologue. It is mostly about gun control and not addressing the source causes of gun violence.
Is this not just another Hollyweird hypocritical, virtue signaling, elites telling us what to believe initiative to take away law-abiding citizens’ constitutional rights?
