Reality Bites: Team Biden In Denial As Economy Officially Enters Recession

Facts and reality are stubborn things. Labeling immigrants as ‘undocumented’ and pretending that they haven’t broken any laws may allow the delusional to feel good about themselves temporarily, but inevitably the term ‘illegal’ will find its way back into the conversation. Inventing new pronouns and trying to convince others that your biology isn’t the authentic you may calm one’s nerves for a time, but ultimately the fact that you aren’t a frog, or a kitten, or a member of the opposite gender isn’t going anywhere. It’s waiting to look back at you in the mirror every time you come across one.

And the Biden Administration can do their best to change the definition of the term ‘recession,’ but at the end of the day – or better stated for this situation, and the beginning of today – the numbers will slap them upside the head with a rude dose of reality. Such was the case with this morning’s report from Biden’s own Commerce Department.

According to Fox Business this morning:

“The U.S. economy shrank in the spring for the second consecutive quarter, meeting the criteria for a recession as record-high inflation and higher interest rates forced consumers and businesses to pull back on spending.

Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of goods and services produced across the economy, shrank by 0.9% on an annualized basis in the three-month period from April through June, the Commerce Department said in its first reading of the data on Thursday. Refinitiv economists expected the report to show the economy had expanded by 0.5%.”

For over a week now, it appeared clear that this news was inevitable. And we knew this news was coming thanks to the gaslighting behavior of various Administration officials. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen was the gaslighter-in-chief, going on various networks to explain, “Even if that [GDP] number is negative, we are not in a recession now.” Pay no attention to your lying eyes.

Biden’s Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has been singing a similar tune while playing the semantics game. And President Joe Biden himself joined in the fun on Monday, stating, “We’re not going to be in a recession. My hope is we go from this rapid growth to a steady growth.” Got that? Not only are we not in a recession, we’re in a period of “rapid growth.” Fantasy is much more appealing than facts if you’re a Democrat.

But with this morning’s news, surely the Administration is backtracking, right? There’s no way they’re going to continue with the ‘everything’s great’ narrative, is there? Think again.

According to CNN this morning, President Biden attempted to spin the situation as follows:

“Coming off of last year’s historic economic growth — and regaining all the private sector jobs lost during the pandemic crisis — it’s no surprise that the economy is slowing down as the Federal Reserve acts to bring down inflation. But even as we face historic global challenges, we are on the right path and we will come through this transition stronger and more secure.”

Deny and spin. Redefine and pretend. That’s the Biden Administration.

Biden is correct in one regard: The news that we are indeed in the midst of an economic recession comes as no surprise… at least to everyday, middle-class Americans. Late Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart balked when asked to define the term ‘pornography,’ but chose instead to declare, “I know it when I see it.” The same could be said the for term ‘recession.’ Even Americans who never spent a minute listening to a Macroeconomics professor can sense such things.

Herein lies the problem for the Biden Administration; a monumental problem. Americans care about things like gun rights, abortion, and civility, and they’re important subjects in our national political discourse. But, with the possible exception of national security during crises, nothing drives political opinion like economic problems. And that’s exactly what the Democrats have: a serious problem with our economy.
