Recently, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has kept his promise to redirect illegal immigrants from Texas to other cities as liberal mayors are furious that he is sending busloads of migrants to them.
Texas, being one of the border states, faces the effects of illegal immigration head on and, with border crossings historically high, it is becoming a humanitarian crisis.
Under the Trump administration, illegal immigration fell to record lows where in 2017, the US Customs and Border Protection made the lowest number of apprehensions in 17 years.
Experts explained that this was largely because Trump’s anti-illegal immigration and strong border rhetoric which deterred people from entering the country illegally.
Fast forward to Biden taking office in 2021, where Southwest border encounters increased dramatically.
According to Pew Research, U.S. Border Patrol reported more than 1.6 million encounters with migrants along our U.S.- Mexico border. This is a quadruple increase from 2020.
That comes as no surprise as illegal immigrants are emboldened to cross our Southern border when Biden is soft on illegal immigration and vowed to stop the construction of Trump’s border wall.
The Office of the Texas Governor stated, “President Biden’s open-border policies have led to a humanitarian crisis at our southern border as record levels of illegal immigrants, drugs, and contraband pour into Texas.”
The federal government has been doing nothing to support the state of Texas and the crisis that illegal immigration has created.
To take matters into his own hands, Governor Abbott authorized the Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety to return illegal immigrants back to the border.
Abbott announced, “The State of Texas is working collaboratively with communities impacted by the border crisis to arrest and detain individuals coming into Texas illegally. Our efforts will only be effective if we work together to secure the border, make criminal arrests, protect landowners, rid our communities of dangerous drugs, and provide Texans with the support they need and deserve.
If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself, particularly with the Biden administration.
In addition, Abbott has been busing illegal immigrants to Washington, D.C since April as a means of protesting the Biden administration’s inaction over the border crisis.
More recently Abbott has started to send them to New York City, where Mayor Eric Adams recently criticized the move.
Eric Adams complained in a tweet, “[Abbott] used innocent people as political pawns to manufacture a crisis. New Yorkers are stepping up to fix it — that’s our city’s values. But we need the federal government’s help — money, technical assistance and more.”
However Abbott pointed out that, “In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city.”
This appears to be highlighting hypocrisy within the Democratic party where they are fine with illegal immigration and boast about how we need sanctuary cities until it is actually in their backyard.
Maybe they only want the unchecked illegal immigration to occur in predominantly red states where the voter demographics don’t favor democrats.
Hopefully, by sharing the crisis with liberal cities, it will compel Democrats to take action to the dire situation at our border.
