By now the whole world knows that Liz Cheney lost her primary last Tuesday – and lost big. Liz lost to her primary challenger by over 40 percentage points – one of the biggest losses by an incumbent in US history. It ends her chance of being reelected in Wyoming’s midterm election. But have you seen her concession speech? It was the most delusional thing I’ve seen since Bagdad Bob stood before the cameras, and proclaimed that the cowardly US Army had been expelled from Iraq – while US troops were coming down the street behind him.
Liz actually said:
Abraham Lincoln was defeated in elections for the Senate and the House before he won the most important election of all. Lincoln ultimately prevailed, he saved our union, and he defined our obligation as Americans for all of history.
There she was at the podium, with the Wyoming sunset in the background, in all of her Lincolnesque splendor, telling the people who had just fired her, how great she is. She seemed to be promising America that she would save us from an even greater threat than the Civil War – another Trump term. She followed that up by saying, “Now the real work begins.” Somehow, she doesn’t seem to see that she was fired, because she’s been doing something other than the work her constituents sent her to Washington to do. But now she’s found her work ethic and she’s ready to hit it – as soon as she can find someone to pay her to attack the Donald. I assume she’s sent her resume to MSNBC already. I wonder if she’s tried the FBI?
Liz seems to think that the people of Wyoming were simply not sophisticated enough to appreciate her greatness. She doesn’t get that the typical Wyoming voter is more aligned with America at large than her daddy, Dick “Dead Eye” Cheney, or any of the January 6th Committee clowns that she’s been hanging with.
Liz cannot grasp that she has let her hatred of one man burn up her love of country. And along the way, she lost her brains as collateral damage.
“Her Greatness” Cheney doesn’t seem to understand that MAGA is not about Trump. He may have invented the phrase, but he didn’t make the movement. The movement selected him.
Patriotic populism was born out of average Americans who were fed up with Washington DC politics. The kind of politics where:
- Personal liberties are under constant attack
- Corruption has created a two-tiered justice system
- Increasing regulations drain our wallets and crush commerce
- Bureaucracies have evolved to rule rather than serve the citizens
- Politicians forget that they have constituents to represent as soon as they get off the plane in DC
The left keeps claiming that Trump created a personality cult, and America is just one serving of Flavor-Aid away from being a gigantic Jonestown. But that is a complete misreading of the situation. I don’t care for Trump’s personality much, and I voted for him twice. But if you’re sick of the DC swamp dictating how to live your life, and the choice is between a bunch of swamp dwellers, and a megalomaniac from New York, the megalomaniac it is.
74+ million people voted for Trump because he was the best option – at that time. He was the only candidate offering something other than Washington DC politics as usual.
We wanted someone to bring the establishment to heal, and Trump was the only person offering to try. The establishment’s reaction to him (Liz’s included) has proven that we chose wisely.
If Liz doesn’t like that, she could have devoted herself to becoming, or finding, a better option. Instead, she formed an alliance with the swamp. That’s why she lost her primary – not because all Wyoming Republicans are victims of Trump’s Svengali-like hypnotism. She lost because she was elected to represent her constituents – and she didn’t. They sent her to do a job, and she decided to do something else.
So, what does a politician do when the voters reject her politics? According to Cheney spokesman Jeremy Adler:
In coming weeks, Liz will be launching an organization to educate the American people about the ongoing threat to our Republic, and to mobilize a unified effort to oppose any Donald Trump campaign for president.
In other words, she’s going to do more of the same. She’s going to educate us common folk – because she knows better than us about threats to our republic. Is that threat:
- Economic collapse – Nope
- Government corruption – Nope
- The dissolution of societal norms – Nope
- War with China – Nope
- The Heartbreak of psoriasis – Not even that
Our greatest threat is Donald J. Trump. And she thinks we need to be educated. Right. I halfway expect to see Liz on The View next week, playing with a couple of ball bearings, and mumbling about stolen strawberries.
As long as she’s behaving insane, she might as well go big – and she did. She’s hinting about a 2024 presidential run. With her concession speech, Liz made it clear that she’s ready to fly out of flyover country and take her act national. She actually compared herself to Abraham Lincoln – comparing her primary loss to President Lincoln’s early losses. I can see how watching Joe Biden stumble around the Oval Office might make Liz think she’s qualified. The man has set a rather low bar. But, she doesn’t understand that just because both she and Lincoln lost an election does not put them in the same moral or intellectual league – any more than getting hit in the face puts Chris Rock and Mike Tyson in the same boxing league.
But she’s convinced that her brand of Trump hatred will play better on a national stage than it did for the common folks back in Wyoming. Of course, that only proves that she hasn’t spent any more time talking to patriotic conservatives elsewhere in the country than she did back in her home state.
On the day after her electoral drubbing, Liz Cheney filed the paperwork to convert her campaign apparatus into a PAC. It will be called The Great Task. If the “great task” is to get Liz elected President, it won’t be a great task. It will be a herculean task – because she still doesn’t get it. She lost her primary because we are all sick of the DC establishment, and she has become the DC establishment personified.
Now she’s going to compete on a national level because she expects the rest of the country to have a greater love of the DC establishment than Wyoming did. I believe that qualifies for admittance to the Bagdad Bob ward for delusional patients at some mental institution somewhere.
To paraphrase Shakespeare, high expectations are the root of all disappointments (he actually said “root of all heartbreak”, but whatever). If Liz really expects to be President, I predict great disappointment in her future.
