Call me a sucker for our national anthem, but it gets me almost every time. I hate the government, I hate the idea of our government, and I hate what our government has done, is doing, and will do. There’s no lost love.
And yet it is easy for me to love this country. When I hear the national anthem I am still moved. Whether it’s watching the stars and stripes go up for a gold medal ceremony, preparing for a grueling competitive race in early morning temperatures, or apparently twenty-year-old flashback videos, I feel it.
The news of Queen Elizabeth’s passing has evoked a lot of responses. Most are positive, a few are unholy, and then there are the ancillary things like this flashback from September 11, 2001.
This is an emotionally powerful video that I had never seen before. It takes you back to a different era and completely foreign time of actual national (and international) unity.

Benny Johnson writes: “Queen Elizabeth plays Star Spangled Banner at Buckingham Palace after 9/11 attacks, breaking centuries of tradition.” I don’t mind tradition at all; in fact, conservatives love it and want to maintain most things considered traditional. Perhaps that’s why this video hits close to home. Precisely because it breaks tradition it becomes a little more special.
The 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, released a powerfully heartfelt and meaningful response to the news that Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, had passed away at the age of 96.
In a statement shared to Truth Social, Trump said this:
Melania and I are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth Il. Together with our family and fellow Americans, we send our sincere condolences to the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom during this time of great sorrow and grief.
Queen Elizabeth’s historic and remarkable reign left a tremendous legacy of peace and prosperity for Great Britain. Her leadership and enduring diplomacy secured and advanced
alliances with the United States an countries …around the world. However, she will always be remembered for her faithfulness to her country and her unwavering devotion to her fellow countrymen and women. Melania and I will always cherish our time together with the Queen, and never forget Her Majesty’s generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor. What a grand and beautiful lady she was – there was nobody like her!
Our thoughts and prayers will remain with the great people of the United Kingdom as you honor her most meaningful life and exceptional service to the people. May God bless the Queen, may she reign forever in our hearts, and may God hold her and Prince Philip in abiding care.
