Two days ago, at around 11:40 am local time in Las Vegas, the Wynn Las Vegas hotel turned into a charnel house. Furious that a group of showgirls wouldn’t take a picture with him, a bloody-minded man stalked toward the showgirls that spurned his advances and, using a “large knife with a long blade,” started slashing and stabbing.
Going on a berserk attack on the sidewalk, the man ended up harming eight total people, a mix of tourists and Las Vegas residents. Two of the victims, Brent Allan Hallett (47) and Maris Mareen DiGiovanni (30) were killed in the attack. The other six were injured but fortunately not killed.
The man was then detained while running away on the sidewalk, with security guards from The Sands hotel and local police managing to detain him.
The suspect accused of killing two people and injuring six others during a stabbing rampage on the Las Vegas Strip is in the U.S. illegally, sources told Fox News.
Yoni Barrios, 32, is a Guatemalan national in the U.S. illegally with a criminal record in California, a source with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.
Barrios is scheduled to appear in court next week to answer for the stabbing spree he allegedly committed.
He will, when he appears in court, face two counts of murder with a deadly weapon and six counts of attempted murder. In an image of him appearing for his court date hearing by the AP, Barrios could be seen with some sort of orange padding. Presumably, that’s to prevent him from injuring himself and others.
DiGiovanni’s brother spoke about her in a statement to Fox News, saying, as that outlet reports:
“Maris always saw the best in people, always gave them a chance, and always accepted people for who they were. Her huge capacity for love led her to have lasting friendships from all over the world. She was a beautiful spirit and soul, and we will miss her for the rest of our lives.”
Yet that “beautiful spirit,” that woman with a “huge capacity for love” is no longer here to bless others with her presence.
Why? Because an illegal immigrant, a man known to law enforcement both as an illegal and as a criminal otherwise but allowed to remain in the United States regardless (thanks for that, California), stabbed her to death on a sidewalk in Las Vegas.
Watch the survivors speak about the incident here:
Barrios said he committed the stabbings to “let the anger out” after the showgirls laughed at him when he asked them to take a picture with him.
