An 18-year-old man in Texas created chaos in a hospital when he visited his girlfriend to watch her give birth to his child.
Marcus Dewayne McCowan Jr. was in the Odessa Regional Medical Center (ORMC) on Monday evening, with his girlfriend who was in labor, according to KMID.
McCowan Jr. is being accused of assaulting two infants and attacking a group of medical staff members who were trying to protect the babies.
McCowan Jr. has now been charged with two counts of Attempted Capital Murder, alongside a slew of other crimes including Assault, Assault of a Public Servant, Resisting Arrest, Attempting to Take a Weapon From an Officer, Criminal Trespass, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Officers were called to the ORMC after nurses dialed 911 and said that the man was choking an infant.
When officers arrived, McCowan Jr. tried to resist but was apprehended and handcuffed after a brief fight. He allegedly tried, unsuccessfully, to take the officer’s gun to use as a weapon at least two times.
In a recounting of the events given by hospital staff to investigators, McCowan Jr. said he was at the hospital due to his girlfriend being in labor.
He physically grabbed a nurse while she was at the nurse’s station and made what she called an “unintelligible statement” before he was asked to leave the area.
Next, he began running back and forth, from one end of the hall to another, in an act that nurses called “odd and unreasonable.
According to the affidavit, McCowan Jr. then charged at “full speed” toward two nurses along with a mom who was leaving the hospital with her newborn.
He then shoved a nurse to the ground while screaming and attempted to enter the hospital’s nursery.
McCowan Jr. stole the newborn from the mother and fled to the lactation room, grabbing the child by the throat with both of his hands. Officials said that the baby’s face was caused to turn blue.
After nurses stopped him and seized the child from his grasp, McCowan Jr. rushed to the nursery where he again began choking another infant.
This time he yelled “Die!” while choking the baby and feigning to throw her to the ground.
A heroic security officer arrived alongside a nurse and stopped him before he could cause further damage to the infants.
McCowan Jr. was found to have a THC vape pen to go along with the other crimes he committed during his spree.
President of Odessa Regional Medical Center Stacey Brown made a statement.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to those who responded to the incident last evening, especially our nurses, therapists, and security team who worked diligently to protect innocent babies and others.
The staff and physicians, along with the response team from the Odessa Police Department, are incredible heroes and we are all so grateful to each of them.
Our Attention is now focused on caring for and supporting those who were impacted by this including our patients, their families, and our staff,” Brown said.
