Since coming off his close election victory in 2018, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ direct and effective leadership has earned him respect from the Republican state legislators; thus, his agenda is becoming the law, one bill at a time.
With his success, the Governors’ name typically appears on the shortlist of preferred GOP presidential candidates for 2024.
DeSantis said on Wednesday that President Joe Biden should get “should be given an honorary membership in the Mexican drug cartels, cuz nobody has done more to help the cartels than Biden with his open-border policies.”
Florida’s Republican Governor says Biden is violating his oath of office by allowing “massive numbers of people” — he estimates 2.5 million since Biden took office — to cross the border illegally.
“Those border communities are just getting killed down in southern Texas with everything coming in,” DeSantis said.
The Governor’s comments come as he approaches re-election in November. It also comes as his stock as a 2024 contender continues rising despite brushing off claims that he’ll run for President.
Florida last month joined several Republican-led states in a legal challenge against Title 42, a Donald Trump-era policy allowing officials to fast-track migrant deportations and limit migrant asylum opportunities. Since the policy kicked in in March 2020, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection says 1.9 million people have been expelled from the county under Title 42, including 647,535 in 2022.
DeSantis is seeking election to a second term as Governor of the Sunshine State. Prior to becoming Governor, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Failure to adequately secure the border poses a public safety threat because dangerous criminals could potentially enter the country.
Many U.S. Customs and Border Protection press releases discuss the apprehension of previously convicted, previously deported sex offenders.
For example, on May 9, Border Patrol agents apprehended a group of people that included an individual who had been “previously convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child in Austin in 2016 and sentenced to two years confinement,” according to a press release, which noted that the person had been “deported in 2018.”
And the same day, authorities also apprehended a group that included an individual who “was previously convicted of 4th degree felonious sexual assault of a child in Johnson County, Arkansas, in 2016 and sentenced to 60 months probation and deported,” according to CBP.
“Arrests like these highlight the importance of border security and what it means for American citizens,” Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens said. in the press release. “Border Patrol agents stand between good people and those who wish to do them harm. They remain dedicated to keeping criminals like these out of the country and out of your communities no matter the circumstances.”
Though DeSantis would be a great candidate for the 2024 election, many of us on the conservative side of the GOP is pushing for a 2028 run instead.
President Trump is still leading in a head-to-head matchup with the Governor, and Florida is running great under Ron’s leadership, so there is no reason to rock the boat.
On September 30, 2021, Gov. DeSantis said he won’t run for President because he’s busy ‘trying to make sure people are not supporting critical race theory.’
