When it first became clear that the staged attack on actor/activist Jussie Smollett in January 2019 in Chicago was in fact a poorly conceived and horribly executed race-baiting hoax, Mr. Smollett should have stopped the bleeding. He should have remembered The First Rule of Holes which states this: When you’re in one, stop digging. But Smollett couldn’t help himself.
[For those who are unfamiliar with Smollett’s shenanigans, consider yourself lucky. If you need a refresher on the circumstances surrounding his buffoonery, click here for a recap.]
Almost three and a half years later, Smollett has now dug a hole so deep, that he apparently thinks the best approach is to keep on going and maybe eventually come out the other side. Meanwhile, those of us who still have a handle on reality are left to either shake our heads in disgust or perhaps laugh. On one hand, Smollett’s antics are pathetic and illustrative of a society that incentivizes victimhood while ignoring facts. But on the other hand, his denials are becoming laugh-out-loud funny.
Consider this latest example in the video below. It’s a lengthy video, and so much to sift through that our BS detectors must launch into overdrive, but a couple of minutes worth will give you the idea. Watch:
What’s fascinating, and entertaining, about Smollett’s insistence on his innocence is his continually tone-deaf choice of words. Let’s consider these four assertions:
“You need to mow your lawn to see all the snakes in your grass.”
Smollett in this instance is quoting a friend, and that’s an interesting choice of words. If the shoe fits, Jussie, wear it. Snake in the grass? That’s one way to describe someone who tries to exploit the racial tensions in our country. And if you’re referring to others, we suggest you find a mirror.
“If I had done this, I’d be a piece of shit.”
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! That is correct, and the fact is that you have “done this.” And we can make this statement with certainty because not only are the facts perfectly clear but you have indeed been convicted of the crime. Therefore, Jussie, that equivalency you have drawn is spot-on.
“If I had done something like this, it would mean that I stuck my fist in the pain of black Americans in this country for over 400 years.”
Again, there’s no need for Smollett to play the “if” game, there never was much uncertainty, and now that our justice system has found him guilty, any doubt has been removed. Your metaphor is a bit peculiar – sticking one’s fist in the pain of others? – but you can put your mind at ease. Aside from your family, perhaps, the only one who has been harmed by your hoax is you. Most black Americans, like Americans of all skin color, recognize your hoax for what it is: a scheme to further your own self-interests by making up a story targeting others for their skin color.
“I am an actor, a director, a writer, a producer. If I were to do something, it would not be to look like a victim. It would be to look like if anything, someone strong.”
Smollett can use the word “if” all he wants, but there is no “if” in play here. You did try to appear as a victim Jussie, and you ended up looking like neither a victim nor someone strong. You look like an opportunistic, devious, race-baiting fool. The time for damage control is long gone, that ship has sailed. The hole you’ve dug yourself is too deep, now you’re just a punchline. So, please, just go away.
