BREAKING: Brandon Wants to Nuke the Filibuster to Protect Abortion

Speaking during a press conference in Spain about what’s happening with “abortion access” and what he thinks the government should do to protect them, President Joe Biden said that he would support the Senate getting rid of the filibuster to pass legislation protecting abortion.

Those comments, which took place after a Thursday press conference in Spain, where Biden is for the G7 summit, came after reporters pressed Biden over what he thinks should be done to protect abortion and he intimated that he thinks the filibuster needs to be done away with if necessary so that the legislature can codify Roe v. Wade.

Fox News quotes Biden as saying, when making that point:

“The foremost thing we should do is make it clear how outrageous this decision was. I believe we have to codify Roe v. Wade in the law, and the way to do that is to make sure that Congress votes to do that.”

“Make sure that Congress votes to do that” suggests that he would be in favor of getting rid of the filibuster so that a vote on the issue would have to take place, something that Biden made clear he was in favor of near-immediately, saying:

And if the filibuster gets in the way, it’s like voting rights, we should require an exception to the filibuster for this action.

This statement was a major escalation from Biden’s Friday speech on abortion, in which he called for legislative action to codify Roe v. Wade but refrained from calling for an end, or at least exception, to the filibuster, saying:

This a sad day for the country, in my view, but it doesn’t mean the fight is over.

Let me be very clear and unambiguous: The only way we can secure a woman’s right to choose and the balance that existed is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade as federal law.

No executive action from the President can do that.  And if Congress, as it appears, lacks the vote — votes to do that now, voters need to make their voices heard.

This fall, we must elect more senators and representatives who will codify a woman’s right to choose into federal law once again, elect more state leaders to protect this right at the local level.

So, his new attack on the filibuster is a major shift, as it means that Brandon is moving on from his call for democratic action at the polling booth and is instead calling on the existing legislature to destroy decades of precedent in the attempt to ram through legislation protecting the right to kill the unborn.

Whether the vote to get rid of the filibuster could happen, however, is unclear. Fox News reported, in the same article in which it quoted Biden, that Manchin has reiterated his support for the filibuster, though how other centrist votes such as Sinema and Romney might vote on the filibuster issue is unclear.
