There is perhaps no better example of a privileged, leftist elitist than the Duke of Sussex: aka Britain’s Prince Harry. He was born with a platinum spoon in his mouth and has lived a life so detached from reality that he can’t begin to relate to regular folks, yet he somehow feels empowered, or perhaps obligated, to lecture the rest of us after a caviar brunch and immediately prior to being whisked away with bodyguards in a limousine.
Add to the equation Harry’s apparently unavoidable penchant for condescension and pompousness, along with his complete betrayal of his family, and the prince becomes one of the least likable public figures on the planet. So, when he is verbally taken behind the woodshed by a noteworthy celebrity or official, many of us find it difficult not to smile. But when the individual clobbering the duke is an otherwise quiet and unobtrusive Supreme Court justice, that tongue-lashing becomes even more satisfying.
During an appearance in Rome recently, Justice Samuel Alito made his first public comments since the June announcement of the SCOTUS decision in Dobbs V. Jackson, a ruling which effectively overturned the infinitely flawed Roe V. Wade decision from 1973. With his comments, Alito did not hold back on various international critics, and he did so with extraordinary sarcasm and antagonism.
According to Metro, Alito’s comments included the following:
“I had the honour (sic) this term of writing I think the only Supreme Court decision in the history of that institution that has been lambasted by a whole string of foreign leaders who felt perfectly fine commenting on American law.”
While the target of that comment was at least somewhat veiled – though Alito was undoubtedly alluding to Canadian Prime Minister and clown Justin Trudeau and French President Emanuel Macron, among others – he also called out U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson by name, adding: “one of these was Boris Johnson, but he paid the price,” referring to Johnson’s recent resignation.
But the following comment left no doubt as to whom Alito was referencing:
“What really wounded me – what really wounded me – was when the Duke of Sussex addressed the United Nations and seemed to compare the decision, whose name may not be spoken, with the Russian attack on Ukraine.”
It’s a sad state of affairs when a Supreme Court justice needs to weigh in on political matters in this way, but his rhetoric was both appropriate and necessary. The viciousness and ignorance that we’ve seen with attacks against Alito and the court have been outrageous, and Harry’s criticisms have been particularly ill-informed. For those who may not remember, Harry’s comments at the United Nations two weeks ago included this statement:
“And from the horrific war in Ukraine to the rolling back of constitutional right in the US, we are witnessing a global assault on democracy and freedom.”
Yes, being lectured by a British Prince about freedom is enough to strike a nerve in any American. Perhaps Harry forgot about that lesson from his personal tutor regarding the Revolutionary War. But when we also consider the man’s obvious illiteracy behind America’s Constitution and the values which created it, his comments become even more enraging. For those who may have forgotten, once upon a time the Duke of Sussex also called our First Amendment and the freedom of speech provided by it “bonkers.”
So, when a brilliant jurist and patriot like Samuel Alito takes off the gloves and goes after Prince Harry, we can all enjoy a moment of gratification. Hopefully, Harry will go back to trying to keep his insufferable wife happy and asking “How high?” when Meghan commands him to jump. In the meantime, let’s be grateful we have people like Justice Alito around to set him straight.
