What was the FBI up to with its raid of Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago? Most online commentary has fallen into two camps: Dems and RINOs generally insist that they were serving a very valid warrant on Trump to find evidence of…something that makes the bad orange man look even more like a bad orange man and conservatives are generally insisting that it was a case of gross abuse of power meant to make Trump look bad at a time when he’s ascendant and Biden is looking worse by the day.
A few others had darker ideas about what was going on with the raid. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrinch, for example, suggested that the FBI might have planted evidence on Trump when it was at his residence.
That comment came when Gingrich appeared on Charlie Kirk’s program and said:
“You have a fake committee being covered by the fake news with a fake FBI, uh, which by the way, you’ll notice they didn’t allow anybody on the Trump side into Mar-a-Lago. So we have no idea whether or not they planted evidence.“
Kirk agreed with Gingrich, saying:
“Yes, that’s exactly right. And Newt, I have a couple thoughts. Number one, I wish I trusted our law enforcement. You need some form of law enforcement to have a civil society, but I’m right with you. I say, oh, they’re planting evidence. What is the strategy behind this to raid a home over a national archive dispute? What is their calculus?”
Gingrich, giving another theory about what the FBI was up, suggesting that the other intent of the raid was the one that’s more accepted in the mainstream: they were there to intimidate Trump and his supporters.
Speaking on that point and arguing that it it was happening because Trump is doing so well right now while Democrats do very poorly thanks to their horrid handling of the economy, Gingrich then said
“Well, first of all, they’ve been building up to this. I mean, if you look at the number of people whose rights they have abused going back before the current head of the FBI, there’s been a consistent pattern of an effort to intimidate Americans. And basically to say to us, ‘If you stand up to us, this is what’s gonna happen to you. If we can do this to Trump, imagine what we can do to you.’ Second, I think their end game is to get Trump into a jury in Washington, D.C., which is an area where he got 4% of the vote — and preferably in front of an Obama judge and then grind him down.
“They’re terrified cause they can see him coming. He’s gonna win in 24. He’s gonna be president again. And this time he’s gonna enter understanding the deep state and enter, understanding how sick it is and enter prepared to fundamentally tear it apart. Uh, and so they’re all looking at a future in which they’ve gotta find a way to get rid of him or their entire world is gonna die.”
But Gingrich wasn’t the only one with an out-of-the-box theory about the intent of the FBI’s raid. Former Trump Advisor and Breitbart chief Steve Bannon did as well, going so far to suggest that the Deep State might be trying to assassinate President Trump, saying:
“I do not think it’s beyond this administrative state and their deep state apparatus to actually try to work on the assassination of President Trump. Everything’s on the table. I think his security should be at the highest it’s ever been, and honestly…I think he should have flown down to Mar a Lago this morning, walked out at noon today, and said ‘Hey, I’m running for President of the United States. Suck on that.’”
Bannon too suggested that the FBI might have planted evidence, saying that the raid could have been “a planting expedition” and adding that he “wouldn’t put it past them to have planted stuff.”
