One of former President Donald Trump’s strongest and most endearing personality traits is his relentless sense of humor. He’s a very funny guy. Depending on the day’s events and available subject matter, a television interview can come across like a sitcom script, sprinkled amongst some profound takes on political topics, and rants at some of his rallies can rival those of some of today’s best stand-up comedians.
We’ve had humorous presidents before, with Ronald Reagan quickly coming to mind, but none at the level of Trump. And despite the intense friction in today’s political climate and national tensions having been ratcheted to previously unseen levels after last week’s outrageous Mar-a-Lago Raid, Mr. Trump this week managed once again to inject some much-needed humor into our political debate, and he did so as only he can.
According to the Huffington Post:
“Former President Donald Trump’s acid-tongued endorsements of Democratic candidates on Wednesday has introduced a last-minute curveball into two New York congressional primaries.
Writing on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump offered what he claims is his blessing to Dan Goldman, the former federal prosecutor who led House Democrats’ impeachment of Trump in 2019, and Rep. Carolyn Maloney of Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Trump called Goldman, the front-runner in Tuesday’s crowded primary for New York’s newly drawn 10th Congressional District, ‘honorable, fair and highly intelligent.’”
In the case of Maloney, she’s running against one of Trump’s most despised adversaries, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), and is in the fight of her political life. But Trump offered some equally entertaining comments on Nadler, explaining:
“On the other hand, Jerry Nadler is likewise a hard driving man, where energy and attention to detail is unlike anyone else in Congress. He is high energy, sharp, quick-witted, and bright. You can’t go wrong with either, but Carolyn Maloney is the better man.”
Brilliant, Mr. President. Well done, sir.
The reactions were predictable. From Mr. Goldman, we had the tired election tampering narrative rear its’ head again when he asserted, “True to form, Trump is trying to meddle in an election,” while one of Goldman’s opponents, Mondaire Jones, tried to play the angle that Trump’s support was legitimate, when he lectured, “It was horrifying that on our way to this very debate, Donald J. Trump endorsed Daniel Goldman… [trying] to defeat progressives like myself.”
A third candidate in the Nadler/Maloney primary, attorney Suraj Patel, played a similar angle to Jones by implying Trump’s trolling was sincere: “I’m proud that Donald Trump has nothing positive to say about me because he knows how much more effective a [leader I will be].”
Not only were Trump’s endorsements themselves hilarious – calling Nadler ‘quick-witted’ and Maloney the ‘better man’ – he somehow managed to keep the laughs coming by getting a priceless reaction from opponents.
The next few years promise to be as politically toxic as any this nation has ever seen. The Mar-a-Lago Raid is likely just the beginning. But fortunately for us, we should expect to see comical interludes like this one to put smiles on our faces.
