Even though yours truly took a two-week hiatus from his weekly documentation of supreme stupidity, knuckleheadedness itself did not take a vacation. In fact, the phenomenon was clearly working as feverishly as ever, then switched into overdrive this week. Up until Thursday evening, the front runner for Knucklehead of the Week had been President Joe Biden’s Press Secretary, the inestimable Karine Jean-Pierre. But after Thursday’s bizarre, occult-like speech from Mr. Biden, our Commander-in-Chief sealed the deal as we bestow the honor upon him for a record sixth time. Congratulations, Mr. President, how proud you must be.
Winner: In a speech about unity and America’s ‘soul,’ President Biden attacks half the country which was a huge mistake.
You’ve all probably seen and heard scores of adjectives used to describe Biden’s speech in Philadelphia this week, one that was laughably supposed to promote unity and reflect on what it means to be an American. On the left, we heard the typical, fawning type of language, with the media and politicians proclaiming the speech: majestic, courageous, and patriotic. On the right, the speech has been described as inflammatory, authoritarian, and disturbing. But perhaps the most suitable word we should use in classifying Biden’s speech is this: idiotic.
One of the more striking, and moronic, aspects of Biden’s speech was the setting. There’s nothing wrong with a president making a speech in Philadelphia with Independence Hall as a backdrop, but it’s a bad idea to do so when the subject matter of the speech is so hyper-partisan. But what was particularly curious about the speech’s setting was the visuals.
The lighting effects around and behind Biden presumably had a different purpose, but ultimately, they resulted in it looking as if Biden was speaking inside a satanic temple. It was mostly dark on either side of the president, though he was well-illuminated, and behind him, there was dark, deep red light rising from ground level. It truly looked like a scene from one of the Omen movies.
Additionally, Biden had two Marines straddling him on either side, standing statuesquely approximately fifteen yards behind him. Ask yourself: When was the last time you saw a president make a speech, of any sort, with members of the military in full-dress uniform, not as audience members but as props? While it’s unclear what the intended message of having the stern-faced marines on the set was, the effective message was clear. I’m Joe Biden, I’m the president and control the armed forces, so you’d better not mess with me.
When we add the devilish imagery of the speech to the president’s actual rhetoric during his rant, the combination becomes particularly troubling.
Biden set the stage early by explaining “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.” While Biden didn’t initially articulate what type of “extremism” he was referencing, the mere language he used was outrageous. If you’re a “Maga Republican,” whatever that means, you are a threat to the country’s “very foundation?” That type of terminology is something we might expect when Barack Obama had discussed ISIS, when Ronald Reagan was referring to the Soviet Union, or when Franklin D. Roosevelt was orating about the Japanese Empire.
But Biden wasn’t talking about a foreign enemy. He wasn’t talking about radical religious terrorists half a world away. He was talking about our friends and neighbors; our relatives and co-workers.
Later, Biden got more specific and he called out examples of that “extremism,” when he proclaimed, “MAGA forces are determined to take this country backwards — backwards to an America where there is no right to choose, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love.”
So, to be clear, according to Joe Biden if you oppose abortion and gay marriage, you are one of the “MAGA forces” which, as he made clear, means you are extreme and a threat to the “very foundations” of the country. Got that?
Yes, Biden’s words were divisive and infuriating, but more than anything else they were incredibly foolish.
While Democrats and their media have been touting a newfound resurgence in Biden’s popularity, that upswing is a myth. It doesn’t exist. On Tuesday, a Reuters/Ispos poll put the president’s approval rating at 38%. Only eleven weeks before the midterm elections, those numbers aren’t encouraging, they’re disastrous. And if Biden and his handlers thought Thursday’s speech would help elevate him, they were sorely mistaken. If anything, Biden’s tantrum is going to make things worse.
What Biden and the Democrats must hope for, along with Republicans, is to persuade the political center: the independent and undecided voters. Such voters make up approximately 25% of the electorate, and like most of us, they have friends and loved ones from both sides of the political debate. Neither Donald Trump nor any other serious Republican figure has gone so far as to label fellow citizens who happen to disagree with them as “threats;” members of the mainstream media notwithstanding. And the fact that Biden lashed out as he did under the guise of promoting unity is beyond absurd, and those centrist voters will take note.
Do you really think that’s the type of speech on-the-fence voters are going to gravitate toward, Joe? Is that the type of language that’s going to convince voters that you and your party are the right ones to be running the government? Think again, genius.
Joe Biden on Thursday gave one of the most ill-reasoned and seditious speeches by any president in American history. He essentially labeled as traitors the 76 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump, along with millions of others apparently. It was a disgusting thing to do but it was also extremely brainless. What Joe Biden did on Thursday proves once again what a knucklehead he is.
Honorable Mention #1: Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has had a rough week.
Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was no great shakes, but seldom did she show such complete ineptitude as her successor, Ms. Jean-Pierre. And though she’s had many bad weeks since taking her new job, this might have been the worst. Let’s take two examples.
On Monday, Jean-Pierre was pressed by Fox News’ Peter Doocy about the government’s requirement to have visitors be vaccinated if they arrive by plane, whereas those coming over the southern border are allowed to simply walk right in. Jean-Pierre’s response was, “But that’s not — it’s not like somebody walks over.” Sorry, Karine, every American has seen the footage of what’s happening down there, and that’s exactly what it’s like.
Then, earlier on Thursday before her boss’s ridiculous speech in Philly, Jean-Pierre had this to say about the president’s upcoming oratory: “If you are not with where the majority of Americans are, that is extreme. That is an extreme way of thinking.” My goodness, she is really bad at her job. So, unless you agree with the majority of Americans on an issue, you’re an extremist. Wow.
Honorable Mention #2: New York Times drops a bombshell that the FBI found 48 empty folders at Mar-a-Lago.
Yes, you read that correctly. Among other things, that FBI raid of President Trump’s home at Mar-A-Lago last month produced a total of 48 empty folders. According to the Times, the folders had been labeled “classified.” But now they’re empty. There’s nothing in them. They’re empty folders. And why, precisely, is that information newsworthy? That, friends, is a great question.
