Top Gun star Tom Cruise is flying high. He returned a drop of magic to the woke, toxic waters of Hollyweird with his insta-success Top Gun sequel. Long on entertainment value and short on pandering to increasingly irate bases, it was simply a great film with call-back messaging. Pro-America, pro-fun, and anti-crusading.
Now, Cruise returns to the big screen, as it were, to hype up his next film production, this time the 7th installment of the Mission: Impossible series. Cruise has long been known to do his own stunts – more on that in a moment – but this one truly takes your breath away.
Cruise begins with a zoomed-in intro:
“Hey everyone! Wish I could be there with you,” he says while smiling, standing aboard a plane. Fair enough, he’s on an aircraft, his hands are tied down, and he’ll get back in the seat, you’re thinking.
Then he continues: “I’m sorry about the extra noise. As you can see, we’re filming the latest installment of Mission: Impossible right now. And right now we’re over the gorgeous Blyde River Canyon in stunning South Africa. And we’re making this film for the big screen, for the audiences to see in your wonderful theaters.”
Stay until the end. You won’t be disappointed:

This is pure insanity and pure Tom Cruise. I don’t even think you could pay me to do that – just sign the check for acting in the film and let’s be done. As mentioned, though, Cruise is an adrenaline junkie – some might say purist as well – and often prefers his own stunt work. The end result is more authentic, with close ups and less CGI. When we know it’s the character doing the work, we get more invested in the film. Cruise is as savvy as he is good at testing his boundaries.
Somehow, this stunt might not even be the craziest thing he’s done for films. A review at Insider pulled up the ten best stunts done by Cruise over his movie career. In reverse order from their own list (meaning I am starting off with #1), here is what they came up with:
Cruise did 106 skydives with a broken ankle to pull off the HALO jump in “Mission: Impossible — Fallout.”
Cruise hung on the side of a plane as it took off for “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.”
Cruise climbed the tallest building in the world for “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.”
Cruise broke his ankle jumping between buildings while making “Mission: Impossible — Fallout.”
Cruise held his breath for six minutes for an underwater stunt in “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.”
As far as the latest stunt, The News broke down the ad further:
A new behind-the-scenes video of the Top Gun actor, 6, has taken the internet by storm. In the clip, he gives fans a closer look at the seemingly impossible stunt, in which he stands on a biplane maneuvering in mid-air and calmly asks moviegoers to see the upcoming film.
The daredevil stunt video was originally recorded for Las Vegas-hosted CinemaCon viewers back in April.
The Edge of Tomorrow star was seen standing on a moving biplane while it was flying over a canyon in South Africa with no harness on. He was holding the plane with one hand as he calmly address his fans.
What can I say? Between Top Gun 2 and a stunt like this, there is some hope Mission:Impossible 7 could be another throwback to 80s/90s action, escapist awesomeness.
