Fox News Channel’s just hit a major milestone that its online/digital division was proud to announce in glowing terms. That major milestone was hit by “The Five,” a hit, non-primetime show hosted by Dana Perino, Greg Gutfeld, Jesse Watters, Jeanine Pirro, and a rotating group of other co-hosts: Jessica Tarlov, Geraldo Rivera, and Harold Ford Jr.
Not all of those hosts are particularly conservative, Geraldo being an example of “The Five’s” more liberal side, but viewers apparently love it, as “The Five” just made cable history by topping the charts for four consecutive quarters in a row despite being a non-prime time show.
Fox News Digital reported as much, saying:
“The Five” averaged 3.3 million viewers to finish as the most-watched cable news program as Fox News offerings swept the top seven. It was the first time in history that a non-primetime cable news program has topped the category for four consecutive quarters.
But the good news for Fox News Channel cable wasn’t confined to “The Five.” Other shows did incredibly well too, with Tucker Carlson bringing in an astounding 3.2 million viewers on average all on his own, and other shows like “Jesse Watters Primetime” and “Hannity” doing well as well.
All in all, those great ratings meant that Fox News Channel blew away the competition, particularly leftist or left-leaning channels like MSNBC and CNN.
In fact, as Fox News Digital reported, Fox News Channel did so well that not only beat both MSNBC and CNN, but did better than those two channels combined during prime time (8-11pm). Reporting on that major victory for the network, Fox News Digital said:
Fox News Channel finished the third quarter of 2022 as cable’s most-watched network among both total and primetime viewers as Americans tuned in for information and analysis during a busy news cycle that featured everything from ongoing economic woes to the FBI raid of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
The busy quarter also included continued coverage of the war in Ukraine, the death of Queen Elizabeth and around-the-clock political news. Fox News averaged 1.4 million total day viewers during the quarter, crushing No. 2 MSNBC’s average viewership of 783,000 as CNN, ESPN and HGTV also landed in the top five. It was the sixth straight quarter that Fox News finished No. 1 in the category, airing 94 of the top 100 telecasts in cable news along the way.
During the primetime hours of 8-11 p.m., Fox News dominated with 2.2 million average viewers to outdraw MSNBC and CNN combined. MSNBC averaged 1.3 million, followed by ESPN, HGTV and Hallmark. CNN settled for a primetime average of only 717,000 and failed to crack the top five as Fox News was the highest-rated cable news network during primetime for the 83rd straight quarter.
And when Fox News Channel’s most-viewed shows are compared to the most viewed shows on MSNBC and CNN, the results are even more astounding. Tucker got 3.2 million average viewers and “The Five” got 3.3 million, as reported above.
Meanwhile, MSNBC’s best show, “The Rachel Maddow Show”, brought in an average audience of only 1.9 million viewers. CNN, meanwhile, did even worse. It’s most popular program was “Anderson Cooper 360,” but that show failed to garner even one million average viewers.
