Colorado Women Saves 3 Children Who Fell In Frozen Pond

A brave Colorado woman has made national headlines after she heroically saved three children who fell into a frozen pond during frigid temperatures. Dusti Talavera was relaxing inside of her apartment in Denver, Colorado, watching children play outside on a frozen pond.

However, at a moment’s notice, the ice broke and the three children fell right through. Before Dusti was able to even think about anything, her instinct kicked in and she jolted out her apartment and ran towards the pond. As she neared the pond she first approached a 4-year-old girl and pulled her out, then proceed to pull out an 11-year-old boy.

There was still one child left in the extremely cold pond, so as Dusti went to rescue a 6-year-old girl the ice gave way and Dusti fell into the pond. Dusti tried to get back to the surface but couldn’t so instead she just kept the 6-year-old girl’s head above water who was unconscious at the time.

As Dusti was wading the water to stay afloat in the 15-foot frigid pond a young teenager arrived and threw Dusti a rope which led to her and the little girl’s rescue.

USA Today reported what happened to the children after the rescue mission:

Soon after, deputies from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene. Deputies were worried about the girl suffering from hypothermia, so they took off her winter coat and began performing CPR. Just as the South Metro Fire Rescue team arrived, the girl began to breathe and she was taken to a hospital.

The two other children did not require medical attention and the 6-year-old girl, who remained in intensive care late Monday, was “expected to survive,” authorities said.

Talavera was praised by the officers and rescue team that arrived on the scene and were truly touched by her actions. Talavera was grateful herself and showed her gratitude to the young teenage boy that rescued her too.

When asked why she risked her life saving the children Talavera replied “I was just worried about them, I didn’t really think about it, I just knew it was me that had to do it.”

Her words are powerful and a reflection of how she put other lives ahead of her own. Philippians 2;4 says: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others“.

We are all like those children playing on that frozen pond, we knew we weren’t supposed to play on that pond but we did it anyway.  However, praise be to God, because we have a rescuer who comes to us in our time of need just as those children had Dusti Talavera come to them in their desperate time of need.

If you ever fall into sin and you think there’s no way out or you’re in too deep, just know there’s nothing bigger than the blood of Jesus Christ. He can rescue you from all things, and in that we should take great comfort.
