Members of the Royal Family and well-wishers across the world took to social media yesterday to congratulate Queen Elizabeth II on her Platinum Jubilee, which marked her 70- year anniversary as reigning Monarch, the first ever Monarch to reign for seven decades – but two family members noticeably withheld their condolences.
On the beginning of her Jubilee year yesterday (6th February 2022), the Queen made the announcement that when her son Charles becomes King, it is her “sincere wish” that his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who is stepmother to Prince William and Harry, will be known as Queen consort rather than Princess.
Charles, Prince of Wales, married Camilla Parker-Bowles in 2005 following the tragic death of Harry and William’s mother Princess Diana of Wales in 1997.
Devoted son Charles congratulated his mother on her 70-year reign and in a public statement said he was “deeply conscious of the honour” bestowed on his “darling wife”. He said:
“On this historic day, my wife and I join you all in congratulating Her Majesty The Queen on the remarkable achievement of serving this nation, the Realms and Commonwealth for seventy years. The Queen’s devotion to the welfare of all her people inspires still greater admiration with each passing year”.
Surprisingly, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made no public statement, prompting Royal Family fans to question the couple’s feelings towards Camilla and Harry’s relationship with his father. Harry publicly criticised his father’s parenting in a moan last summer, suggesting in an interview that Charles had “passed on pain and suffering” and treated him “the way he was treated”.
As Harry and Meghan are not individually social media users, the couple usually make public statements via their charity’s website, but on this occasion, they made no official comment regarding the Queen’s announcement about Harry’s stepmother.
This comes after sources revealed that Harry intends to return to the UK from California, where he and his wife share a $14 million mansion, for the Jubilee celebrations this June when Britain will enjoy a four-day national holiday to mark the historic occasion.
It is unknown as to whether Meghan Markle, 40, and the couple’s two children Archie, 2, and Lilibet, 8 months, will also make the trip.
Celebrities old and young took to Twitter to express their support and admiration of Queen Elizabeth and for the lifetime of service she has provided, not just for Britain, but also for the Commonwealth nations, charities and innumerable good causes.
Crooner Rod Stewart praised her for being a “wonderful example of how to conduct yourself with integrity and grace for 70 years now (just like me!) and we should all look forward to acknowledging her magnificent service! Sir Rod.”

The White House’s official Twitter account posted about the important role the Queen has played in “strengthening the ties of friendship, shared ideals and faith in democracy that forever unite our countries”.
