If it weren’t for West Virginia senator Joe Manchin, America would be in a significantly worse place right now. Though he’s still a Democrat and Slow Joe, despite Manchin, has still managed to push through a bit of radical leftist garbage, there is far less of it passed into law than if a Chuck Schumer acolyte or spineless RINO was in Manchin’s position.
While his complete resistance to both ideas was certainly his best hour, it’s not just the Build Back Better bill and nuking of the Senate filibuster that Manchin is using his power to shoot down. He’s also trying to hold up some of Biden’s nominees, particularly the more radical ones.
One of those nominees is Dr. Robert Califf, who Biden has nominated to run the Food and Drug Administration, someone that Manchin doesn’t support, as he sees him and his outlook on Big Pharma as being responsible for the opioid epidemic ravaging West Virginia.
Speaking on his refusal to support Brandon’s nominee, Senator Manchin said:
“I will vote no on Dr. Califf’s nomination, and I have never been more profoundly confident of a vote I’m going to cast than I am right now.
Dr. Califf has shown us who he is, and he has shown a complete lack of interest in actually making the difficult decisions that we need the leader of the FDA to make. Nothing that Dr. Califf has said or done has led me to believe he will operate the FDA any differently than he did during his previous tenure.”
Those comments came during a speech in which Manchin encouraged his fellow senators to “send a message to this administration, to our President, that we need a new direction at the FDA.”
Unfortunately, Manchin’s resistance, in this case, wasn’t enough to stop Califf’s nomination.
In a 50-46 vote, Big Pharma sympathizer Dr. Califf was pushed through the Senate and is now the head of the FDA.
A few other Democrats joined Manchin in voting “no.” According to the New York Post, “Democratic Sens. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, as well as independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont joined Manchin in voting against, citing his ties to the pharmaceutical industry.”
But, of course, RINOs were able to throw away that help from an unlikely corner and pluck defeat from the jaws of victory, pushing Califf over the finish line. The usual suspects went ahead and nominated him despite his Big Pharma ties and the opportunity to stick a thumb in Biden’s eye, again according to the NYP:
“Democrats were able to confirm Califf with votes in favor from Republican Sens. Roy Blunt of Missouri, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah and Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania”
So, yet again we have the spineless RINOs to thank for an easily avoidable loss; they turned down the help from the left and created a GOP defeat all on their own.
