President Trump isn’t the only one who ripped into Biden’s plan to stop Putin with sanctions, saying that such a response is weak and not going to stop Putin.
Tulsi Gabbard, the former Democrat representative from Hawaii, also took Biden to task for his sanctions plan, albeit taking a different line of attack on them. Speaking on the sanctions plan, Gabbard told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson that what sanctions will do is increase costs for Americans.
First, saying that sanctions don’t work at stopping Putin but do work at raising the costs for consumers, Tulsi said:
“The reality is the sanctions don’t work, whether put in before or now or later, the sanctions don’t work. What we do know is they will increase suffering and hardship for the American people.“
Then, explaining how his use of sanctions in this situation shows what’s wrong with Biden and his administration, as it shows that they don’t care about what is best for Americans, Gabbard said:
This is the whole problem with the Biden administration. They are so focused on how do we punish Putin that they don’t care, and they are not focused on what is actually in the best interest of the American people.
She then ended with a powerful message, explaining what Biden should have said and what the sanctions really mean for average people:
So when Biden stands there and looks directly into the camera and says defending freedom will cost us, what he really should be stating is looking directly into the American people’s eyes and saying, ‘This will cost you.’
Because the sanctions are not going to cost him or Kamala Harris or the power elite in this country or even the power elite in Russia, it is the people who will suffer, the American people, the Russian people, and people here at home working hard every single day facing those drastically increasing prices at the gas pump, facing increasing cost of the supermarket, impacting our supply chain.
The hardships that people are dealing with every day now with Biden sanctions plan, we will only see that continue to get worse.”
Tulsi has a point. Was Saddam Hussein stopped by sanctions? No, but his people suffered severely. Has North Korea been stopped by sanctions? No, but the starving people suffer severely. Has Putin been stopped by sanctions? No, but Russians are living worse lives because of them and learning to hate the West again.
Sanctions might be worth it in some circumstances, especially with countries like Iran or North Korea where the effect on the American people is minimal and the effect on those countries is severe.
But when dealing with the Russians, there should at least be some weighing of the costs and benefits when contemplating sanctions. There’s a real cost to them and it doesn’t look like Biden considered that cost in the least, much less figure out if the sanctions would actually work.
