Republican or RINO? Utah Governor to Nuke this Conservative Priority

A key priority for many Republicans right now is keeping transgender athletes out of women’s athletics, protecting the ability of young women to compete in sports without being blown out of the water by a man identifying as a woman.

Unfortunately for parents of female athletes in Utah, that state’s RINO governor, Spencer Cox, is claiming that he will veto a bill that would prevent transgender athletes from dominating women’s sports.

The Daily Mail, reporting on the issue, notes that Cox is planning to buck the GOP trend by vetoing the bill, which passed on Friday. In that outlet’s words:

Utah Governor Spencer Cox said that he plans to veto legislation passed on Friday that would ban transgender student-athletes from competing in girls sports within the state.

Without his support, Utah is unlikely to join the 11 other states, all Republican-led, that have recently enacted bans on transgender girls wanting to compete in school sports leagues that correspond with their gender identity.

The same report goes on to add that Cox made the issue personal, pandering to the transgender athletes rather than protecting the rights of female athletes:

In vowing to veto the bill, Cox directly addressed transgender student-athletes, who he said found themselves the subject of political debate through no fault of their own.

‘I just want them to know that it’s gonna be okay. We’re gonna work through this,’ Cox said.

He made much the same point in a tweet, saying:

We care deeply about Utah’s female athletes and our LGBTQ+ community.

The bill Cox has vowed to veto is an eminently reasonable one, simply banning biological males from competing in women’s sports. Describing why the bill was necessary, Republican state Senator Curt Bramble, said:

Boys can run faster, they can jump higher and they can throw farther than girls in the same age bracket. To have individuals that are born male compete against naturally born females, it’s an unfair playing field.

That’s in line with what many parents of young women think about the issue. A parent of a swimmer is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying, speaking about U Penn swimmer “Lisa” Thomas, who has dominated women’s swimming:

We support Lia as a trans woman and hope she leads a happy and productive life, because that’s what she deserves. What we can’t do is stand by while she rewrites records and eliminates biological women from this sport.

“If we don’t speak up here, it’s going to happen in college after college. And then women’s sports, as we know it, will no longer exist in this country.”

Indeed. Yet Cox, whether out of cowardice or out of some sick desire to please the left and prove that he’s “nice,” refused to protect the rights of young women in his state by providing a level playing field for them. So, he’ll veto the bill and they’ll have to compete against biological men.
