These Two GOP Senators to Meet with American Trucker Convoy

The American Truckers’ convoy, called the “People’s Convoy” by the organizers of it, has rolled across America, picking up steam and attendees in its journey to DC, with an amazing 60 miles of truckers headed to make their voices heard within the Swamp.

The truckers have now reached their destination and made it to DC, where they’re circling the Beltway to express their displeasure with Covid mandates.

As the People’s Convoy organizer, Brian Brase, put it.“We are law-abiding citizens that are just exercising our rights to this protest.”

However, while their message is powerful, the People’s Convoy has so far been significantly less disruptive than the Freedom Convoy in Ottawa, which shut down the Canadian capital for days. As WTOP reported:

The People’s Convoy, a group of truckers and others who circled the Capital Beltway twice on Sunday, hit the road again Monday but didn’t cause major disruptions on the Beltway.

The group has been cagey about its plans, although organizers have told various media outlets that they plan to continue their convoy throughout the week.

They’re protesting COVID-19 mandates, despite the fact that many restrictions are no longer in place, along with myriad other issues under the banner of “let freedom roll.”

Regardless, now that they’re there, Senators Cruz and Johnson plan to meet with the truckers, something the duo announced in a press release available on Senator Ron Johnson’s website. The announcement simply states:

On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will meet with The People’s Convoy to discuss the harmful effects of President Biden’s vaccine mandates.

Media availability will occur after the meeting.

While they’re the two who will be meeting with the convoy, they’re not the only ones who support it. Senator Rand Paul, for example, spoke earlier in February in support of trucker protests generally, saying:

“I’m all for it. Civil disobedience is a time-honored tradition in our country, from slavery to civil rights, you name it. Peaceful protest, clog things up, make people think about the mandates.”

However, what the duo hope to accomplish by meeting with the truckers is unclear, as the goal of the protest is to end the national emergency declaration that gave the government its power to deal with Covid in such a heavy-handed fashion, but the Senate has already voted to revoke the authorization. Craig Caplan of CSPAN noted that on Twitter, saying:

48-47: Senate approves a resolution by Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) to end the COVID-19 national state of emergency, first declared by President Trump in March 2020 and later extended by President Biden. It now heads to the House, which is unlikely to consider it. WH opposes it.

Perhaps the two senators hope to use the event to get the White House and House of Reps to change course and support the idea of revoking the mandate, but their work in the Senate is already done, so what help they can provide will be limited. More realistically, they’re just hoping to use it as a PR opportunity.
