Beto (Robert) O’Rourke famously declared “Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans anymore.” He must have forgotten, or just ignored, the fact that assault with a deadly weapon is already illegal.
In any case, he also went off on the bullet fired by the AR-15, saying:
“If the high-impact, high-velocity round, when it hits your body, shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do that so that you would bleed to death on a battlefield … when we see that being used against children.”
Never mind that shooting children is already illegal, Beto wants to disarm you to protect them! No wonder Texans don’t want the skater bro tyrant in charge.
Watch that little outburst of his here:
Well, Beto finally explained how he’s going to go about taking people’s AR-15s: he’s going to “buy them back.” How the government can “buy back” something that it never owned in the first place is unclear, which makes gun “buybacks” look more like “gun confiscation but you get a gift card.”
Regardless, they’re the strategy that gubernatorial candidate Beto is pledging to use to get AR-15s out of the hands of Texans. When asked to clarify his stance on gun control, something that his Texas audience very likely won’t support, Beto went full steam ahead on the buyback idea, saying:
“I don’t think anyone should have one [an AR-15, the most popular rifle in America]. And if I can find the consensus within the Legislature to have a law in the state of Texas that allows us to buy those AK-47s and AR-15s back, we will. As you said earlier, I cannot mandate or dictate anything as the next governor of the state of Texas. I’m going to have to do this by listening moving forward.”
He also blamed guns for the violence inflicted on cops by thugs, saying:
“You have seen a spike in gun violence. More cops or sheriff’s deputies or members of law enforcement have been gunned down in the state of Texas than in any other state. So when you hear b—s— about defund the police – and some folks support law enforcement, some don’t – Greg Abbott turned his back on those members of law enforcement who put their lives on the line for this community, and they’re losing their lives at a faster rate than in any other state because of it.”
How disarming law-abiding citizens will protect cops from being shot by the sort of lawbreakers that will kill police officers was unclear, but it was obvious that Beto somehow thought it was a winning talking point.
Texans, however, love their guns. From the days of the Alamo until now, they’ve proudly stood by their right to keep and bear arms. In fact, in Texas you don’t even need a permit to carry a gun. So, Beto’s remarks likely won’t make him all that popular with the Texans he’s trying to convince to vote for him.
