The legislature of the great state of Oklahoma just passed what amounts to a near-total ban on abortion, a ban on abortion that Governor Stitt is widely expected to sign.
Describing the bill, the New York Post reports that:
The measure would make an exception only if an abortion was performed to save the mother, lawmakers said.
Doctors who perform abortions under other circumstances would face a $100,000 fine in addition to a long prison sentence. Patients would not be prosecuted.
The language of the bill itself provides that:
A person convicted of performing or attempting to perform an abortion shall be guilty of a felony punishable by a fine not to exceed One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($100,000.00), or by confinement in the custody of the Department of Corrections for a term not to exceed ten (10) years, or by such fine and imprisonment.
The Post adds that the Oklahoma lawmakers passed the bill, SB 612, with “little discussion and no debate” and also passed a resolution that calls for the lowering of flags to half-staff on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. It’s as if they tried to find what measures would most infuriate the leftists and then went ahead and passed those.

However, in addition to not punishing those women who get abortions and allowing abortions in the case of medical emergencies, SB 612 doesn’t prohibit contraceptives or morning after pills, saying:
[this bill does not] prohibit the sale, use, prescription or administration of a contraceptive measure, drug or chemical if the contraceptive measure, drug or chemical is administered before the time when a pregnancy could be determined through conventional medical testing and if the contraceptive measure, drug or chemical is sold, used, prescribed or administered in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
The legislation does not, however, allow for abortion in the case of rape or incest: other than in cases of medical emergencies or morning after bills, the bill would completely prohibit abortion in Oklahoma, a major win for pro-life activists.
Describing why even the rape and incest exceptions are not in the bill, exceptions that even most pro-life advocates generally allow for, CNN reports that:
Republican state Rep. Jim Olsen, the bill’s principal House author, told CNN that he believes “rape and incest is a horrible crime” and though the baby is conceived in a “horrible situation,” that it “still has a right to life.” “The baby should not be liable for the sins of the father,” he said. “It’s still a life.”
While the left will certainly freak out about the bill, we’ll see if they can do anything beside bemoan the bill’s passage; Oklahoma is a deep red state and the Supreme Court has 6 theoretically conservative justices, so they’ll likely seem impotent in their outrage.
