While the left continues to melt down and say “gay” because it doesn’t understand the content of Governor DeSantis’ parental rights bill, a bill that does little more than stop teachers from talking to young children about sex or radical sexual theories, DeSantis is already moving on and back on the offensive.
Rather than just fight the culture ware in the schools and sexual theory realm, he’s kicking things up a notch and also joining the fight against abortion, following in the footsteps of those red states like Texas and Oklahoma that have made it much harder to kill babies and have sent the left into a complete rage by doing so.
He did so by signing into law a 15-week abortion ban, a ban that will take effect on July 1st. The bill does, as reported on Yahoo, however:
“[contain] exceptions if the abortion is necessary to save a mother’s life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality. It does not allow for exemptions in cases where pregnancies were caused by rape, incest or human trafficking.”
Despite those reasonable exceptions, the new law is a good bit more restrictive than current Florida law, which allows abortions up to 24 weeks into the pregnancy.
Describing the need for the law when signing it, Governor DeSantis said “We are here today to protect life. We are here today to defend those who can’t defend themselves.” He then added that “This will represent the most significant protections for life that have been enacted in this state in a generation.”
He made those comments while surrounded by young children holding signs saying “Choose Life” and at a podium displaying a babe’s feet and heartbeat that read “Protect Life.” It was very effective, from an aesthetic standpoint.
With the signing, Florida becomes the most recent Republican-led state to pass a 15-week abortion bill this legislative session. DeSantis’s signature immediately follows the Kentucky legislature’s Wednesday override of Democrat Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto of a similar abortion bill.
Leftists were predictably apoplectic about the bill. Stephanie Fraim, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, went berserk in a statement about the new abortion restrictions, saying:
“If these politicians think the fight against this abortion ban is over they are sadly mistaken. We won’t rest until our rights are restored. No one has the right to control what we can and cannot do with our own bodies.”
What Fraim misses is that the bill isn’t just meant to restrict abortion, it’s meant to protect babies generally. In addition to stopping their murder after 15 weeks, it beefs up the state’s smoking cessation program for pregnant women and gives nearly $2 million to create infant mortality review committees throughout the state. The bill isn’t about restricting the rights of women; it’s about protecting yet-to-be-born babies.
