Former President Barack Obama, during a recent speech in which he compared Steve Bannon to Vladimir Putin in an obvious attempt to make Bannon sound like an aspiring tyrant or evil mastermind, called for yet more censorship, saying:
People like Putin, and Steve Bannon for that matter, understand it’s not necessary for people to believe this information in order to weaken democratic institutions. You just have to flood a country’s public square with enough raw sewage. You just have to raise enough questions, spread enough dirt, plant enough conspiracy theorizing, that citizens no longer know what to believe.
Says the guy whose party and its allies in media and Big Tech pushed the Russia hoax about former President Trump, flooding the public square with that “sewage,” and which then did its best to cover up the truth about the Hunter Biden laptop.
So, Tucker Carlson took Obama to task over the speech, saying:
“Barack Obama gave a big speech at Stanford yesterday on ‘disinformation.’ Now, like the Atlantic magazine’s conference on disinformation at the University of Chicago, the conference was all about promoting disinformation, but because self-awareness has been banned, nobody noticed.”
Continuing, Tucker blasted Obama as a “full-blown fascist,” saying:
“So this guy is not just liberal. In fact, he’s not liberal at all. He’s a full-blown fascist who hates you and wants to keep you from talking, or else.
“He wants censorship of anyone who disagrees with him, and now he just comes out and says it.”
Then summarizing Obama’s call for more censorship to protect “democracy,” Tucker said:
“‘So me and my friends at the Aspen Institute need to be in complete control of every word uttered or else it’s not democracy.’ That’s the case he’s making. That’s the case they’re all making.”
Obama, in his speech, largely placed the blame on tech companies and called on employees to get even more vocal in their demands for censorship, saying:
“But not all problems we’re seeing now are an inevitable byproduct of this new technology. They’re also the result of very specific choices, made by the companies that have come to dominate the internet generally, and social media platforms in particular. Decisions that intentionally or not have made democracies more vulnerable.
“[…]These companies need to have some other North star other than just making money and increasing market share. Fix the problem that in part they helped create, but also to stand for something bigger.
“And to the employees of these companies and to the students here at Stanford who might well be future employees of these companies: You have the power to move things in the right direction. You can advocate for change, you can be part of this redesign — and if not, you can vote with your feet and go and work with companies that are trying to do the right thing.”
Obama seems more a commie in temperament and sympathies than a fascist but, regardless, Carlson’s point is spot-on: Obama’s calls for more censorship are obviously motivated in a desire to silence those he dislikes, a desire to crack down on and crush free speech.
