Reports are starting to come out that disgraced Fox anchor and failed CNN+ host Chris Wallace is already lining up to embarrass himself further in the media. The 74-year-old personality could easily walk away from the game, but he simply can’t imagine not being on someone’s television screen.
One outlet, The Wrap, writes that Wallace will still headline the same titular show over at HBO Max, hosting “Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace.” Personally, I would like to know who is talking to Wallace and suggesting he bounce from network to network rather than retire. Yes, he’s getting big bucks. No, I don’t want to listen to him. The dismal CNN+ numbers suggest no one else wants to either.
The Wrap goes on:
“[Puck’s Dylan] Byers reports that in addition to hosting his show on HBO Max, Wallace will continue to do work for CNN as new CNN head Chris Licht begins to sort out where to deploy talent at the networks under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella.”
In other words, we might still be seeing a lot more of Wallace than less of him. Good grief. For all of the enthusiasm at watching CNN’s streaming service swirl hundreds of millions of dollars down the poop chute, this report reminds us that Wallace didn’t necessarily go down with the ship. In fact, he got placed on a bigger network boat – though his future at CNN remains unseen at this time.
HBO also represents a similar angle that Wallace wanted to pursue. It probably isn’t worth investigating too much, and as reports go on to note the future of media is streaming much more so than dinosaur brands of basic cable like CBS. Still, Wallace got his start thanks to his father’s legacy career in exactly that outlet. Did he explore resurrecting his father’s legacy? Did they turn him away? Is he simply going where he’ll be had?
The Wrap notes that HBO is a particularly peculiar landing spot, considering not many viewers consider the platform as one for serious political discourse. It writes again:
“HBO Max is not home to many original news or interview programs, although it is the streaming home of HBO staples like “Real Time with Bill Maher” and “Axios.” But Wallace’s shift to the streaming service could be a preview of what the newly combined streamer under Warner Bros. Discovery will look like, as Discovery said in March that it planned on combining HBO Max and Discovery+ after the merger was complete.”
Previously, we speculated about Wallace’s own path forward CNN+ sank into ratings abyss and ownership axed it. Just two weeks ago, Wallace was making the rounds to bridge the collapse of CNN+ and his next plans. He said he was “fine” and going to be “in good shape, whether it’s at CNN or someplace else.”
The only thing that remains to be seen is how this new gig turns out. My guess? Not well.
