Elon, when buying Twitter, didn’t just say that he wanted to defend free speech on the platform, though that was obviously a major reason behind his purchase. No, he also said that he wanted to “unlock value” at the company and get serious about fixing technical problems with the platform, saying:
“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”
Well, now Elon is getting super serious about that and unreservedly telegraphing that he means business about getting back to business. He said as much on Twitter when tweeting out a Fortune article on the subject, saying:
If Twitter acquisition completes, company will be super focused on hardcore software engineering, design, infosec & server hardware
I strongly believe that all managers in a technical area must be technically excellent.
Managers in software must write great software or it’s like being a cavalry captain who can’t ride a horse!

Who are those tweets a message to? Two groups of people: aspiring applicants and current Twitter employees.
Elon, in a few short tweets, is telling both groups that only serious people will be retained by the platform.
In effect, he’s saying that the work at Twitter won’t be woke or ideological, with people being hired because they are woke enough or willing to censor those who their managers disagree with. Rather, to work at Twitter from now on, one must be “technically excellent.”
That’s a message that many of the current, woke Twitter employees may not like, but that Elon seems intent on sticking to and defending.
The Fortune article notes that Twitter might have trouble retaining its current staff thanks to their fear of Elon or hatred of his stance on certain issues, saying:
In its SEC report this week, Twitter said that Musk’s takeover might cost the company advertisers, staff, and users regardless of the outcome of the takeover — if it reaches a final conclusion or if it somehow fails along the way.
“The announcement and pendency of our agreement to be acquired by affiliates of Elon Musk may have an adverse effect on our business results, and a failure to complete the merger could have a material and adverse effect on our business, results of operation, financial condition, cash flows, and stock price,” the company wrote.
The report specifically highlighted the possibility that the company’s current period of uncertainty might lead to issues related to staffing. A consequence of the merger, the company wrote, could be its “inability to attract and retain key personnel and recruit prospective employees, and the possibility that our current employees could be distracted, and their productivity decline as a result.”
Fortunately, that sort of thing shouldn’t dissuade Elon. He seems laser-focused on making Twitter all it can be, not on backing down and clutching his pearls because of the demands of woke, useless employees.
