Shocker: Dorsey Sides with Elon on Trump Ban

What was Jack Dorsey’s Twitter known for, particularly by the end of his time running the social media giant?

Censorship. Trump had been kicked off. Mike Lindell was kicked off. Michael Flynn was kicked off.  Thousands upon thousands of other, smaller conservative accounts were kicked off, all in the name of…”our democracy”, or something equally vague and dumb.

Well, now the former CEO is shockingly reversing course on that censorious path, at least to some extent, and has declared that he thinks Trump should be allowed back on the platform.

News on that first came from Dan Primak of Axios, who said:

Musk says @jack agrees with him that there shouldn’t be permanent bans on individual Twitter users.

Reminder that Dorsey was CEO when such bans were implemented.

Then, surprisingly, Dorsey chimed in via a comment and said that he did, in fact, agree with Musk and explained as much in a tweet about his current stance on the subject, saying:

I do agree. There are exceptions (CSE, illegal behaviour, spam or network manipulation, etc), but generally permanent bans are a failure of ours and don’t work, which I wrote about here after the event (and called for a resilient social media protocol):

That comment came as a quote retweet of his message from when Trump was kicked off in the wake of the January 6th trespassing event, at which time Dorsey said:

I do not celebrate or feel pride in our having to ban @realDonaldTrump from Twitter, or how we got here. After a clear warning we’d take this action, we made a decision with the best information we had based on threats to physical safety both on and off Twitter. Was this correct?

No, no it wasn’t, Jack. It was a terrible call that only heightened tensions more and stifled discourse in a shocking way, though perhaps it was good in that it led to Elon buying Twitter to end the reign of censorship that came about under your watch.

Dorsey’s comments came shortly after Elon’s announcement that he thinks Trump’s suspension from the platform was morally wrong and that he would let the former president back on the platform if Trump wants to come back. Watch that here:

As you can hear, Musk said:

“I think it was a morally bad decision to be clear and foolish in the extreme. I guess the answer is I would reverse the perma-ban,” when asked about letting Trump back on the social media platform.

“I do think it was not correct to ban Donald trump I think that was a mistake … It alienated a large part of the country and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice.”

But now that’s over, or at least has the potential to be over, depending on what Musk actually does once he’s ruling Twitter with his Tesla scepter. Hopefully he’ll live up to his promises, particularly on the free speech issue.
